We saw that one last night. Pretty good with a gritty CGI London. Dr Watson in his army "Patrol Jacket" in one scene and limping a bit on his Afghan wound. Holmes and Watson do a lot of hand to hand fighting with the villains.

How would you compare it to the Rathbone/Bruce series of the 40s?

Not at all. Jude law is not doing the Nigel Bruce interpretation although Holmes does "goof" on this Watson. There is much more action as well and the two women characters have more to say and do than the 40s versions.

There's a "Steam Punk" look to the film with lots of gadgets.

The film is also sort of a prequel to the stories with Prof. Moriarity being introduced, but the main villain is a new character.

The Rathbone/Bruce serie with the Jeremy Brett one are my all time favorites. I have their complete DVD sets :). I saw a preview of this new SH and it looks very entertaining. I am planning to see it this week with wife and (my older) kids...Thanks for the review.

Yes I have seen, read and listened to every production of Holmes I can find so I will definitely see this one as well. No one yet has improved on Rathbone/Bruce for me but I also enjoy the Brett series and very much recently enjoyed the Rupert Everett and Ian Hart version The Case of the Silk Stocking. I think their Holmes/Watson dynamic was the best so far since Rathbone/Bruce and I would like them to do more.

Well, I have no problem with a new interpretation of Shelock Holmes - it's probably long overdue.

My concern is that the STORY is good and characters well-developed. If it's just a lot of CGI tricks and mindless action, then I will probably be disappointed. Not that I mind any of that stuff - it's just not a substitute for a good story and characters. I'll probably end up seeing it - though maybe on cable and not in the theater. I hope it IS good.

You may like the "clues" that Holmes looks at in each scene which are later explained and that Holmes is not squeamish about a crime scene or being around a victim. The scenes are not all Victorian drawing rooms but a slaughter house, slums, and a ship yard. Holme's apartment is squalid by choice.

Think Johnny Depp in Sleepy Hollow without the Prissyness.

We were promised the leading lady in a corset and chemise but that was cut. Only a little upper back nudity. ;) I brought my 14 year old daughter. It's PG 13.

Saw this one yesterday and really liked it. As a kid I grew up with my Dad who was a huge fan of the Rathbone series from the 1940s along with Charlie Chan, The Falcon, The Saint, etc, all of the series B detective films.

This movie is no where near any of them. That being said, this is an excellent movie in its own right and I thoroughly enjoyed the scenery, music and acting and in general a fresh look at Holmes. I really like the cliffhanger ending and I hope we get a sequel!!

I loved the old Rathbone movies and I'm sure I'll like this one as I like Downey and Law's movies usually.

We are seeing this one in the coming week. I haven't found one that compares to Rathbone and Bruce. They were the first though. It was a spoof, but I really loved Without a Clue. Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley did a great job.

I'm glad to see Robert Jr. getting a break...

I have always liked him and thought he was a quality actor...

the first thing I remember him in was Less Than Zero...

and he aced the role...

as part of the "Brat Pack"...he got a lot of work...

but his addiction to drugs kind of wiped out his career...

claiming he was addicted to drugs at age 8...

in his comeback...I thought he was good in a lot of his roles...

but I really liked him in Tropic Thunder...

becoming a fan again...he was okay in Iron Man...

Sherlock Holmes looks promising...I will go to the theater to watch it...

I like comeback actors and atheletes...

Mickey Rourke...Kurt Warner...etc...

Excellent movie. There is no comparison with any other SH movies because this one was based on a graphic novel by John Watkiss...
more info is here

Interesting stuff but to be clear, the movie was NOT based on a graphic novel. As noted in part in that link: "......There were however a number of commissioned illustrations by John Watkiss as part of the pitch document. And eighteen of them are on display and for sale, both as original art and as prints at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California.";)

I thought the movie was rather good and made in Director Guy Ritchie's usual style.
And like his other movie "Snatch"....Sherlock Holmes had some very brutal fight scenes.

Now that the distraction of being married to Madonna has gone hopefully we can see more films from Ritchie. He always gets a good cast (except for the one with his wife). I am looking forward to the follow up to RocknRolla.

Well it should be good with a cost of $80 million; rather incredible for a movie of that genre. I presume it is rather visual.:D
