Should we add manufacturer categories to Vintage/New Traditional Gloss forum? (2 Viewers)

I do not collect old Britains mainly because they are hard to get hold of over here. I do not agree that old people are computer phobes my 73 year old Mom is a big jazz fan and orders stuff from Amazon all the time. She is in skype contact with my brother in Toronto and does internet banking. This forum is a K and C forum and that is that. We all know ACW is popular yet we do not see much activity here. Similarly we know Old Britains is popular but we do not see much of it either.

I was generalising (as we often do) but I do believe the internet scares a lot of people. I work for an ISP and you would not believe the amount of people calling daily who admit to being scared of computers or are newbies to the internet world.

I'm sorry Damian but I don't agree with you. Although this forum started out principally as a K & C forum, over time it has expanded and changed and we try to make it inviting to all kinds of collectors. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Although it may seem to some that is heavily slanted towards K & C, to say it is just a K & C forum is not quite fair.

Although some older persons may be familiar with computers, I don't think it's a generalization to say that many don't care for it.

I must respectfully disagree, sure it's a generalization, in that we consider it to be true generally, that is, for a majority of examples, even a slim majority, but also recognizing that it isn't an absolute, that there are exceptions.

(Something I learned to express, listening to Dennis Prager's radio show).

Whether it's valid, though, requires examining the number of examples, and how many fit or don't.

Prost!

I believe that the collectors of old Wbritains are most likely too busy WORKING FOR A LIVING to be on the forum!;):) Mike

I frankly fail to see how this is germane or helpful to the subject at hand or whatever Mr. Prager, whoever he is, might have to say.

I read your post to mean that you disagreed with the premise that older people are less computer literate, or comfortable with the technology. I was trying to refute the idea that such a generalization might not be useful. It is entirely possible that I didn't understand the point you were making.

I live in Upstate New York, and the public libraries all have free computers with internet access for the residents to use. The library near my house has 12 free computers for public use, adn every time I go to the library, all the computers are taken by these 70+ people surfing the internet. Maybe some are scared of the new technology -- but from what I see allot aren't scared.

I agree with Dickbuttons. I live in a small City in Washigton State. Of the adult education courses offered by the city and community college, computer classes are the most popular and filled with seniors. Many of us were fearful of computers in the late 70s and early 80s but got past it some time ago.

Hi Guys,

I hear what you are saying but I still think a lot of the older collectors of vintage sets dont frequent the forums because of whatever reason be it techno phobes of just not interested in sharing. I would also agree that there are plenty of folks out there who use the computer but there are also plenty who dont. Its probably silly to speculate on why as I can only site my fathers unwillingness to use the web unless one of his kids is doing the work. So whatever the reason I think we can certainly agree that the bulk of the folks picking up Vintage sets are doing it at the auction house and have probably been buying sets that way since the 70's. I know I get beat by floor bidders at a lot of these big Vectis and other auction Houses on live bid quite often.

But like I said before we really cant debate this too well with out any empirical data to go on.

All the best

Dave

Agreed. We'll never know for sure until we try. And, it can't hurt. We could have had a sub group up and running during the time we have spent discussing it.

To get back to what I said, this forum is based on TF who sell new toy soldiers. So I suppose it will not really come up if some-one is doing a web search for old WB or dime store or Mignot etc. I think TF the shop is the entry port for TF the forum, so it is only natural that true vintage collectors will tend not to gravitate here.

Not that I collect these, but I think you have made a very sensible conclusion here.

A thought to ponder -- I have had occasion to do various web searches and on occasion I get hits on various TF forum entries. There is a possibility (however remote) that some collectors are not familiar with this forum and have never utilized its services. And, ther are some who have never taken the opportunity to contact various forum members.

I have been very fortunate in that I have met various forum members who have sold me sets, have bought some of my sets, have repaired some of my sets, have provided me with referrals, etc., etc. How can it hurt to share the enormous benefits of this forum with the soldier collecting world at large. And, how can it hurt if we (forum memebrs) are exposed to new or old collectors?

Can I ask if the forum is advertised at the shows. Perhaps if the various sellers had some treefrog forum cards to give out?

After reviewing the comments and recommendation and banter a chatter about the age categories once again it goes on and on and on and on . Shannon I adore you but let's leave this thread is it's not worth the time and effort you'll have to spend as it currently covers he categories of Vintage and New Traditional Gloss figures which reflect toy soldiers and pretty much to date has covered most of the past and current manufactures. I'm sure I'll get scolded for this but it's accomplished nothing to date and I honestly feel it isn't worth the time your willing to spend to change it. Once you have if you decide to you'll get why wasn't this listed or why did you leave this or that out or can we have that. Your a princess when it comes to spoiling us but for some reason or another it never seems to be enough for most. That's my story and I'm sticking to it an will no long comment on the subject.....The Lt.

Joachim,
I humbly dissent from your humble viewpoint in regards to a pin being an effective marketing tool at a show to raise awareness of the Forum. Unless the pin is the size of a leggionaires shield.;) A double sided shirt would market slash advertise the forum and the website store of TF much more effectively.
Not that I'm into anyone elses advertising other than my own ! Mike

a) Who said my viewpoint was humble?
b) The pin obviously is just support for the Bigfoot-ish TFT mascotte walking through the show as well as the Hindenburg sized blimp with large TFT logo frogs gazing down on the unsuspecting crowd outside (thus raising awareness).

What could a shirt possibly add to that?

;)
