I am new to the forum and collecting. I have a question that I am hoping someone can help me with. I am attempting to build a diorama. Can I mix 1/32 scale soldiers with 1/28 or 1/35 scale soldiers and vehicles? Is there a noticeable difference in the sizes? Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. The short answer is yes there is a difference. That being said you can mix sizes if you want but there can sometimes be a noticable difference in the soldiers and the vehicles. However I will say that when I was doing dioramas I would mix the 35th and 32nd scale stuff together because I was the only one looking at them. Now I will also say I have never messed with 1/28 scale stuff but I would think it would be too different in size to go with the troops in the other scales.

You really need to ask one of the other guys on the display section like Fishhead or Fubar or any of the others what they think. They will give you the straight answer you seek.

All the best

Dave

Hi WW2Spirit and welcome to the forum.

This question has been banded around in one format or another on quite a few occasions. I think you will find that it is a matter of perspective. My view is that generally, the scales are a little too different to mix up, especially if you're planning to use them on the same diorama.

You might well get away with some of the vehicles, but I think you'll find a noticable difference with the figures.

It gets more complicated than that as well.

Take the 'middle' scale of 1/32 if you put a Conte figure next to an Airfix figure next to a Gun Ho figure, they will all appear to be of a slightly differing scale, although all are marketed as 1/32.

That said, if you take in to account the varying height and build of a person, you could quite conceivably make this work.

If you gave us an idea as to what figures or vehicles you had in mind, I think that there will be plenty of responses as to whether they would work together.

Of course, don't expect the responses to be the same :D but it would give you an idea before reaching for your wallet.

Hi WW2spirit, welcome to the forum.

There are some on this forum who would tell you that to mix scales is the primary sin that a collector can commit. My advice to you is to do whatever you like to do. Its your hobby and your enjoyment. You decide if the mixture looks good to you. It is your money and your hobby. Nobody has had their birthday taken away because they mixed scales.

I read this post and tried to avoid replying because this always seems to be a subject that we all seem to disagree on but, as dave just brought up my name I guess that I,ll give my two cents on the subject.:p

I thought at one time that they wouldn,t look right together or that you would have to put the smaller scale figures in the back to create a kind of forced prespective but after seeing posted dioramas by fubar and others of mixed scale set-ups I see that it can work.

You mentioned 1/28scale which I,m not that familiar with but I,m thinking you mean vechicals in this scale which I think would be O.k. because I think you can get away with a lttle more with them than the figures.

I would just watch the placement of the figures in the diorama and let your eyes be the judge and not place an overly large figure on side of a small one. There are tall and short humans fat and skinny ones also.:p

Some manafactures scales also vary quite a bit and try and pass off 1/35 as 1/32 or 1/30 as 1/32 ect. ect. so just let your eyes be the judge and you can also set your smaller figures back further and your larger figures closer.

I hope this helps you out in some way. I,m sure others will have other opions but just do what looks good to you and the hell with what other think and enjoy what you like and what looks good to you.

That's very true and even a fussy collector like me didn't notice my Forces of Valor German Panzer figures were actually 1/35 not 1/32.

I don't think you could get away with mixing 1/28 and 1/35 on the same diorama, but the closer matches usually work ok if the pieces are placed correctly.

Thank you all for your kind welcome and for your advice. I have experienced what some of you have alluded to in that when I put my forces of valor vehicles up against Britains figures the size does look off. I will probably try to stick with one manufacturer in each diorama. Thanks again.

I too am fussy about the scale and usually keep to 1/30 e,g, K&C, HonourBound figures.

Having said that, some vehicles are not available so I have parked a 1/32 frontline cromwell in the background and a $2 plastic british truck that I painted - but hid them a bit with bushes. That way they add to the perspective and the overall picture but the scale difference (and important lack of quality compared to the 1/30 scale) is not noticed. So I agree with earlier comment - do what you like, it is how you place it and what for that counts.
