Snipers in Afghanistan (1 Viewer)

Rob,
You beat me to it. I was just about to post this as heard it on the radio on the way home.

Great story and shows there is a lot we do not hear about.

Interesting that the two with one shot is named after Quigly a movie with Tom Selleck as a cowboy in Australia.

Regards
Brett

instead of 2 in the chest, one in the head, my new mantra will be

British snipers have been doing this stuff for years and long may they continue.

Read a book many years back about their exploits on the Western front in WW1, wow that was a dangerous life. Snipers were really hated and hunted down whenever possible. I remember a story of a Belgium boy Sniper who had been picking off British soldiers and had many ID tags on him when captured. Despite being only about twelve they took him to the side of the road, made him dig his own grave and then shot him through the head there and then, harsh stuff.

That is pretty brutal no doubt. Snipers have always been despised. Many soldiers just don't want to do the work- a lot of guys go into that with these romantic "loner" notions which it really isn't at all.

Its the same with Machine gunners Chris. I remember many dare not print their stories after WW1 for fear of retribution. Then there was that well known German guy on Omaha beach on D Day.Alone in a bunker with machine gun and Rifle he spent hours firing on US Troops that day, screaming for help through fear as he did. They now believe he was responsible for killing more allied troops than any other single person in WW2. He eventually slipped away and was captured without anyone knowing what he'd done, I think he eventually went to live in the US and spent the rest of his life there suffering from mental problems brought on by that day in Normandy, he died some years back.

As you say Chris its all brutal isn't it.

Interesting story mate. I would like to get more info on that one.

I dunno, machine gunning was ok- I humped an M60 and messed about with the hog (SAW) and fired an M2 .50 Cal several times. Something different with snipers though, many troopers see them as murderers- go figure. :rolleyes2:

Sniping is far more concealment than actual shooting ability. A lot of people don't get that- they can shoot- don't get me wrong- but, especially in today's environment, it's all about not being seen- which can be tricky with all the electronic gadgets and gizmos. I never really had any desire to be a sniper- always liked the idea of having several squadmates around- you can't see everything!! ^&grin

Harsh yes but, I suppose when your croutched in a trench etc and not able to stand or move much because of snipers then nerves and attitude towards them will be frayed. They were also used heavily in the borders of ireland during the conflict watching the bad guys come from south to north with great effect

If memory serves Chris I think it was from a docu entitled ' Slaughter on Omaha' , he is reputed to have killed hundreds that day and wounded many more . He said that it only really hit home what he was doing when his mg became so hot he had to stop for a while and pick up a rifle and do it, it became much more personal then he said.

Gripping, Horrific and shocking all at once.

Hee-wack-ado. That rifle looks like a potential war winner. The bad guys are gonna be in worse trouble than ever, now. -- Al
