"The followers of the Mahdi were called the 'Ansar', translated as 'helpers', and the colored patches-initially used to repair torn clothing on the jibbeh- proclaimed their allegiance. Later, different tribes would wear different coloured patches to distinguish themselves. Their weapons included single-shot long-arms; Remingtons taken from the Egyptians, British Martini-Henrys, and some Italian and French weapons. Spears and swords were also used..."
