Somebody is Watching You !

I just noticed this morning - there are only 22 Members on the forum and....

158 VIEWING outside the Membership

Just brings to mind the issue with NMROCKS - there are people who we dont know - WORLDWIDE - watching us and taking in our information.

A little food for thought today :D

Yo Trooper, yes really surprising. I vote they should not be able to view forum, if they cannot be bothered signing up.
Bernard.

I think most of these are what you call "Slurp Spiders"......whatever they are?

Jeff

Jeff

you could be right but you can set a server up to distinguish between........google bots, yahoo spiders and slurp bots and humans.

all the spiders and bots are used by all the major search engines to look for information to help speed things up when you look for items on them.

they look for key words and pictures etc.

They are good for a site and do no harm. i would say that the those that are numbered are viewing guests. i know there are many K&C UK members who look and dont join in.

Tony

But Tony, they are missing out on so many features--and it doesn't cost a brass farthing to join! Tell 'em to sign up even if they never post a single word. We welcome them all and they'll be glad they came.

Currently, if you check the 'current active users' at the bottom of the page you will find there are 2 pages of guests (approx 43) and 8 pages of these slurp spiders..

Jeff

Capitolron...I noticed that you are hidden or were hidden from view...I tried this feature myself for a half hour....really boring....in a way you want the Forum to know your here and if you want to just look...then look as a guest...I believe that there are quite a few who are hidden from view...

Invisible mode is an option for all members and many people use it for various reasons. If you've tried it and don't like it don't use it but if someone else wants to exercise that option that is their choice.
Reading the forum as a guest is the least user-friendly method we've got and I wish all guests would register even if they never post just to experience the smoother ride.

Wasn't trying to put anything down...just discovered it the other day...sorry if I stepped on someones toes.

It's not a major issue, but there was one member that was trying to use the 'invisible' option as a way to attack other members by suggesting its use is sinister.

I decided to go invisible as I frequent a number of forums and have them all opened on tabs at the same time and I reckoned it was best not to appear to be on Treefrog when I was actually somewhere else. I also tend to leave the computer on most of the day with the forums still open even when I'm not at home, and being 'visible' for that long could look a bit pathetic

It seems that I have a member who likes to follow me around the forum and try to pick fights with me - at every chance - the "cloaking" device helps make that harder for them. ;)

Nothing sinister on my part - I assure you.

I dont believe OZ was speaking about me. :)

No, it wasn't you Ron, it was the usual suspect :D

Probably there is a number of people watching the forum that just don't yet have the information/confort to feel they can debate, which might be a good sign of new people coming into the hobby. Also surely many others don't just have the time to post regularly or don't feel they can speak enough English to post.

Yes Shannon, thats why I joined. When I first started this hobby I was looking for pictures of Conte's ships. By Googling, I found some and came accross this Forum. Not knowing, as a lurker, I wasn't getting all the Forums features.

I also didn't appreciate how broad this hobby really is.

By signing up, I found what I was really looking for, the foundation of the hobby, which are its people whom are in it.

If your just browsing but havent signed up that would make you a guest .....I don't think you meant you signed up then went invisible...doesn't matter just thought the two might be mixed up? I don't think you can become invisible unless you are a member and signed in.

Well I just hope the IRS and there buddies around the world, you know HM Receiver of Revenue or the SA Revenue Services don't start putting little spyware on some of these hobby forums.
