During my research into the Battle of Stalingrad for our range, I uncovered these rare archival photographs capturing the struggle for the Barrikady Gun Factory. I can't judge exactly when they were taken, but I assume it must have been late October or early Novembr 1942 when the Germans were clearing the last of the large manufacturing halls that dominate the complex and were pressing on towards the Volga which lay only a few hundred meters away. As we know, they never did make it...

I thought some of you might be interested in them...

I have many more of these Archival photographs and will post more later as I identify each. In particular there are some fantastic wide shots that really provide an excellent view of the sheer size of the Barrikady complex. I believe in one shot I can see a vehicle of some sort, but the image is hasn't survived well over the years and must be restored to a level where I can make out the details of exactly what it is. I will continue to work on this and update you all with any progress I am able to make.

I hope you enjoy this first glimpse of what is to come...I will be posting these and many other images to our website in the next week or so, so stay tuned.

Great pics ! Wonderful new WWII Figures ! Some German collectors might be interested in...:D Regards from Germany Marcus

These Russians are simply one of the best WWII characters I ever saw...Excellent release Matt, good job.

Rod.

Those are masterful, most impressive figures and even more so put in that setting.:cool:

Boy,

You nailed this one Matt.

Great figures, great poses, great buildings, great set up.

Excellent photography!!!

Kudos to you.

Matt,
I'm pretty good at restoring old photos. Check the examples below of Flashy and Henchmen outside the Lucknow Residency just prior to the Sepoy Mutiny.
If you want to send me your old archive stuff I'll see what I can do with them. My technical assistance doesn't come free though, sad to say.
However, we can always discuss the resultant discount I'll receive on the new Russian figures at your leisure.
:cool::cool: :p:p

Matt-
One more voice in the chorus of those raving about these new pics. Your presentation here is an excellent way to show off the figures. It might make me reconsider where my First Legion budget is going, WW2 or Napoleonics!

Again, great stuff.

I just received a copy of "Island of Fire" by Jason D. Mark. All I can say is wow! The amount of detail provided regarding the battle for the Barrikady is wonderful. I think this one is going to queue jump in my "to read" pile of books.

I pre-ordered the Sturmpioniere in addition to the other figures I have already pre-ordered.

Yep, fantastic book. I was actually reading my copy again just yesterday. Read pages 103-105 and you will find the inspiration for our Combat Pioneer Demolition team.

The only disappointment I have with the book is that it doesn't cover the actual battle for the factory complex itself from October 15th or so through end of October. It gives brief coverage to the small assaults from November 1st to November 10th and then all of it's coverage is on the final assault from November 10th through the 20th or so and then all the way through the final surrender. So, while I agree it's a fantastic book, when I got mine I was hoping for coverage of the assault through the factory complex itself. Rather, it focuses only on the Island of Fire, the thin strip of ground behind the complex on the banks of the volga. Still a fantastic book nonetheless...

Everytime I read it, I want to produce a Hauptman Rettenmeir figure. :)

Matt,
Is the vehicle a locomotive?:rolleyes::cool:
Top Notch everything!

Mike

Ahh, we thought we'd snuck that one by everyone. Yes, our first vehicle to go with the range will be a locamotive. Good catch! And we're doing it despite the fact that I've been told that Eastern Front locamotives don't sell.:D:D:D

To those who are interested, you should check out Jason's latest book Angriff.
All photos from the battle of Stalingrad. Aug to late Sept./Nov. Most never published. Excellent captions providing info on the pictures.Great book. I believe it contains over 700 photo's. Don't let this book slip by.

What about the price

Thanks

The price was about $80 dollars. But, I will say right here and now, as high as the price is, it is WORTH every penny. It's a large book not like his previous
books which run smaller. Sharp photographs. All photos have details and have been well researched to even include names of the persons in the photosl. Printed on quality pages. Most of these photos have not seen the light of day. I was very happy to order this book. Not many photo books on the market today dealing with the battle of Stalingrad.
Many diorama ideas. Vehicle photos. The works in my opinion. If anyone is a fan of this battle, If that is a correct way to put it, GET THIS BOOK....

For example. After many years of seeing the Officer pictured below in numerous other battle photos in other books , Jason was able to track down the name of this officer and his outcome in the battle.

I agree, this is definitely another great book. I received my copy a few weeks ago.

As for the price. I don't think $80 is bad for what you get. This is what I expect to pay for a quality reference book with good content, paper and binding.

Personally, I think everyone on the forum should buy both Island of Fire and Angriff. What? Ulterior motives? Who me? :D
