Now that the second release of SOE is being offered in both matt and glossy versions will the first release of Skinner's Horse also be made available in gloss as well as matt? Those who will be collecting the gloss versions of SOE and are completists would hope that K&C will make these available so that they will match the new and forthcoming releases. Are the gloss versions being made using gloss paints or is this a glossy finish added after painting with matt paints?

I am VERY interested in the new glossy versions of the SOE. I have bought the current matte offerings and am thinking about converting them to gloss to match the new releases. I haven't made up my mind yet as I am normally loath to alter originals in any way. Just happy that the SOE will be offered as glossies as my entire NWF collection (other manufacturers) is glossy. I might be crazy here, but I think the new KC Napoleon in Egypt line would look great as glossies too. -- Al

I can't wait to compare these magnificent new sculpts painted in gloss to the Seaforth Highlanders and "Les Miserables" figures K&C produced in 1996, and to the original K&C 15th Ludhiana Sikhs it produced in 1990-91.

At the end of Volume III of the K&C book, the volume about K&C glossy production, I made the following commentary:

"In 1996, finally, two sets of odd figures were added that set the high water mark for K&C’s glossy production, the four medieval Standard Bearers from the Palio Races in Sienna (produced upon a commission from Toy Soldier Magazine) and “Les Miserables”, the figures from the poster for the musical (produced upon a commission from the producers of the musical for the Hong Kong stage, and available only in Hong Kong). The four Palio Standard Bearers are each individually sculpted in separate positions, wear four historically correct heraldic costumes and carry four different heraldic banners. The sculpting is good, but not exceptional by today’s K&C standards, but the glossy paint jobs are the equal of any of the present exceptional matt production. The “Les Mis” figures are exact three-dimensional representations of the figures depicted in the poster for the musical. The sculpting is exceptional and, if matt painted, would look good alongside of the present Napoleonic matt production. These last two sets tease collectors with the unlimited possibilities on the horizon of K&C glossy production, which sadly, were never explored further.

For me, the saddest part of the elimination in 1996 of glossy in favor of matt finish is my belief that, for 18th and 19th Century subjects, the traditional glossy finish for toy soldiers adds a certain element of charm and nostalgia lost with a matt finish. While it is undeniable that a matt finish adds to the reality of the figures, offering them in both matt and gloss, like Andy had been doing, enabled the company to make both traditional toy soldiers and connoisseur historical miniatures from the same ever improving castings."

I can't wait to actually have the chance to see K&C's "even improving castings" painted to a high level in a glossy finish!^&cool^&cool^&cool^&cool

I must say I love the look of these new SOE releases, and with them spread out I may just be able to afford them, but in the event I do I just can't decide between gloss or Matte??. What do you guys think they will look best in?

I love the matte look, on modern (WW1, WW2) type figures. I prefer gloss on just about anything else. I just like the nostalgic charm and appearence of gloss figures. -- Al

The original glossy figures by K & C, were they already in the regular K&C scale (1/30) or were they more likely in the traditional 54mm scale?
Was wondering about the same question as Randy, if the Skinner's Horse will be offered in gloss too, but also if they will match in size with the new Ludhiana Sikhs?
For some reason I always think 1/32 when talking about glossy.
Konrad

Konrad,

The original K & C glossy were 1/32.

As far as Randy's question about the figures being painted in glossy paint or just a glossy finish, I would presume the former but as Andy is at the West Coaster, that will be a question that will probably have to wait his return.

As to Rob's question, I think gloss is best for these kinds of figures.

See here for one of the brochures showing some of the older glossy Sikhs.

Here is another brochure photo.

Thanks, Brad,
now I am looking forward to the weekend and the westcoaster.
Maybe we get to hear some more comments about this start of a new glossy series.
I hope that a few of the glossy figures will be on display and we get to see some photos.

I am definitely getting these in glossy, and I am hopeful that they are close enough in scale to be displayed with the original K&C glossy figures. The sculpting is undoubtedly superior, and if the glossy paint job is done to today's matt standards, these will be the finest regular production glossy figures produced to date. And it's just "Louis", mon ami, no need to call me "Mr."

Rob...

Buy one of each and then decide. I think Matte would be the way personally but, can see the attraction of gloss
Mitch

I agree 100%
To today's standard they will be the best
glossy figures ever. the glossy connaisseur figures.
I tip my hat to Andy. It might be the start of something.
More power to KC.
I wish they would be at Sunday's show already,
i beleive they will be popular.
Every collector has a little glossy in him.

Matte must prevail at all costs, sorry gloss people. Cheers, Robin.

I used to think like Robin and look down on "old fashioned relic of yesterday" gloss. After all, WWII was the place to be and everything had to be in matte. Then in 2006 I helped Louis put out part of his collection for his first Symposium in his new house. Now, they weren't gloss (Rough Riders and Nelson's Navy) but I started opening my mind. Interesting Stuff I thought. After the Symposium I purchased what Treefrog had left of Nelson's Navy and I was headed down to the road to ruin :D

It didn't take long before I started bidding on glossy items on eBay and fell in love with glossy, so much so that's it's now the favorite part of my collection. I would sooner part with everything else than the old K & C gloss.

When I see some of my earlier condescending posts about gloss I cringe.

Give yourself a chance and you'll come to like it.

Gloss is the place to be. Matte is so yesterday :D

Yeah, matte really takes the shine off some figures.
Ouch! To early for that one.^&grin My favorite figures (with one exception), have always been my gloss NWF figures and now with KC doing gloss SOE (NWF), I am a happy camper. I hope all the future SOE come with a gloss option. -- Al

If you don't like gloss Simon maybe you shouldn't post in this thread :rolleyes2:

Oh, but I do Brad, I do. Just certain eras work for me more in gloss than matte. AZW, NWF and WWI I prefer in gloss, WWII, Modern, Naps, Ancients and Mid Ages I prefer Matte. No rhyme or reason that I can think of, just what tickles my fancy.

We have to see them first to say whether they are better or not. It gives collectors another option. I don't think matte is so, yesterday, it revitalised a failing hobby IMO and will always be the most popular medium K&C etc will do.

K&C looks to please all and continues with the greatest variety. I personally think both finishes are great, though glossy is more favorable for me!
