Yes, it must of been unnerving being just a few men as Wayne portrays here.
But amazingly they did go into, what for them were Barbarian lands as they expanded their Empire. Then defending it for a couple of centuries or so. Definitely tough men. But everyone living out on the frontier was hardier, with little in the way of medicine etc and of course a totally different mindset to most people today.
