I just got home from vacation today and to my surprise the new sd.Kfz.251/22 Ausf. D winter Pakwagen was waiting for me. Like a kid I didn't even take time to unpack the luggage from the vehicle. I immediately opened up the box and began to study this excellent piece. I must say I am very pleased with the Pakwagen. The whitewash is extremely well done and the detail that went into the vehicle is awesome. The figures that coincide with the Pakwagen are also well detailed and fit in nicely with a Battle of the Bulge diorama I am working on.

Thank you to Andy and everyone at K&C for this terrific vehicle. K&C has always been tops on my list. The dedication K&C shows to this hobby where they continually put out new quality pieces on a month to month basis is greatly appreciated by myself and many others. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

I have to agree - it certainly does look good.

That's a sweet looking model.

Here's a question for the German buffs - is my source right that the sd fkz 251/22 didn't enter production until 12/44? I was thinking of one for Normandy, but it looks like there weren't any there (so I almost made a $169 mistake!).

I do not know about December being correct. My source says late 1944 so it could have been a bit earlier. Late could mean as early as September. As the Pak40 were conversions of existing 251 Ausf Ds, the "production date" is a bit vague. So you are safe to say there were none at Normandy but it is likely there were some in Normandy camo in western Europe after the Normandy breakout in Autumn 1944 and at the Battle of the Bulge.

The 251/22 typically had 2 closed ammo bins holding a total of 22 rounds. A large triangular shaped bin was designed to fit against the right side of the fighting compartment and hold 17 rounds, and a small vertical bin to the left of the large bin holding 5 rounds was below the gun mount platform. K&C has a 10 round bin under the gun platform and the large triangular ammo bin (door closed) to the right.

The high variant number (22) is telling. Schutzenpanzer from Ryton Publishing says it first appeared in December '44.

Great pictures Sahara. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Frank. That fixes the date better. So the 3 colour camo would likely have been more common in Spring 1945 otherwise it would likely have been covered with white wash.
