St. Pats day (1 Viewer)

Spam is actually my favorite breakfast meats after bacon. The trick to good spam is to fry it crispy. We had a strong military presence during WWII and learned to love all kinds of canned food being poor field workers. Spam, Vienna sausage, corned beef, deviled ham, luncheon meat, sardines, I love them all.
"Sons of Hibernia"? That one went over my head. What does that mean?
Paul, now that's a sandwich! I had to look good to find the bread. How much does that cost?

Amusing to see a discussion of this nature about one's country without any contribution from Ireland! So belated greetings to all from Ireland where there are actually no leprauchans but where there is the occasional toy soldier collector!!!

Well, maybe no leprechauns, but you are certainly seeing a lot of American green.

The Emerald Isle has emerged as the world’s top recipient of U.S. foreign direct investment, according to a report from the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland. In the first nine months of 2014, Ireland beat the likes of Canada, Mexico, the U.K. and China to earn the title of America’s favorite nation for business.

During that period, $37 billion flowed from American businesses into Ireland, a 42% increase. Meanwhile, total U.S. investment in Europe was down 19% year-over-year at $115 billion.

Since 1990, those businesses have put more than $277 billion in Ireland. That’s more than U.S. investments in Brazil, Russia, India and China combined.

Irish Tax Cut

How does Ireland attract U.S. businesses? It’s not just the luck of the Irish. For one, the nation has some of the lowest taxes in Europe.

Ireland’s corporate tax rate of 12.5%, compared to a 21% rate in the U.K. Both countries are far below the U.S. federal rate of 35%.

How much does it cost? I'd say about three years of your life expectancy each time you eat one.

I drove past that joint on the way out of the show Sunday around 6:00PM and it was absolutely mobbed.

And speaking of food, one of my good customers brought me a meatball sandwich from an Italian joint in the area, it was outstanding. I did well at the show, but even if I didn't, I'd go back just for another meatball sandwich.

That sandwich is 25.95, but you get the slaw too. You get extra bread so it can be shared or you can take it home and eat it at your leisure. The menu says it feeds 1-2 people. They have strategically placed defibrillators placed around the deli.

It looks like a $25.95 sandwich with a couple pounds of meat. I'd give it a shot if I was in the area.

There seems to be a big ersatz Irish presence in Gettysburg. Maybe due to the Irish Brigade. There is even an Irish store that sells all manner of shirts, flags, and trinkets related to Ireland. I always wonder how they stay in business as I've rarely seen a customer there.

Warning: People who deny the existence of leprechauns, may themselves be leprechauns. :D

Prost!

I hear they have a huge leprechaun business.

I amazed that that store is still there too, but I have bought a few things there. You can never have enough "McGrath" coffee mugs. the Irish population may be increasing by one in the near future. I would love to move there.

Harold's is the last place I'd eat. A few years ago, the health authorities closed the one in Parsippany. I don't know if they moved to Edison or this was a sister restaurant but the one in Parsippany close for good shortly thereafter.

Not sure if it is the case now in the UK but I never remembered celebrating St. Patricks Day. When we first moved to Canada we opened a British pub. On that first March 17th it filled up with punters asking for green beer, Irish stew etc...of course we were stumped and people said "Well it's St. Patricks Day of course" to which my Mum replied but I am not Irish. Over here it doesn't matter was the reply.

Needless to say the following year we were ready for them !!!

There is a major difficulty with leprechauns as regards their scale... Are they 1/30, 1/32 or 1/35. It has even been suggested (in the US) that they may be 1/72. A familiar conundrum in TF land?!!!

Thanks for the tip, I'll pass on that joint; if the cholesterol doesn't get you, food poisoning will.

For those of you who get TCM Online, you can access the movies with Irish themes TCM played on the 17th, including Ryan's Daughter, a great, great movie.

A terrific movie. I was quite irritated that TCM put it on in the middle of the night. I'm too old to stay awake that late. ^&grin -- Al

Do you have one of those Tvs that can record it. Also, I get TCM through the iPad. It's a great way to watch movies.

Brad, I think I have that recording ability, I just never have bothered to learn how it works.:redface2: There are a lot of things, technology wise, that I have access to but don't take advantage off. My kids all laugh at me because I don't even have (or want) a cell phone or whatever those things are called these days. No Facebook, twitter, texting, twerking, or whatever. I do know how to use my touchtone phone and turn on my laptop and Hi-def TV, so I'm good. Geez-geez.^&grin -- Al

Al,

I have Direct TV and it couldn't be easier to do. Ask your kids to show you.

I have an iPhone and the smart phones are the greatest thing going. For example, I use my iPhone to list all the things I sell on eBay; I use it to take the pictures, write the listings and communicate with buyers. It's like having a computer in your pocket wherever you go. I even use it to watch Netflix.

I would be worried though if you were twerking ^&grin

No worries about twerking. Some days I can barely walk... :wink2: -- Al
