Another oldie!

I picked this faded old figure up on the weekend that could do with restoration. It is 54mm and I believe it is a Tradition figure by Stadden. The uniform is of a British line regiment home service dress. I have had a look through my collection of Tradition magazines but cannnot find this figure, although there are similar figures and the eyes are painted in the same style.

Wondering if anyone can identify the regiment the figure represents? I'm not knowledgeable on helmet plates.

And should there be a spike on the top of the home service pattern helmet? I believe there should be, however if you look closely at the figure it doesn't appear to be broken and there is some plume like sculpting on the top. It does look like it has been partially repainted though (two shades of blue).

Any ideas? Trooper??

Thank you.

Scott

This figure could reprisent almost any line infantry regiment post 1902.
IN 1881 the "Cardwell Reforms" (named after the Sectretary for War) set about "rationalising" the infantry regimental system, this basical joined together two numbered battalions e.g. 64th foot and 98th foot into one named regimet in this case the North Staffordshire Regiment.
Instead of having lots of different facing colours (collar and cuffs) the idea was that "Royal" regiments (that includes titles like King's Own etc.) were to have blue facings, English and Welsh were to have white facings, Sottish regiments would have yellow facings and Irish, green facings. As it happened only the Connaught Rangers ended up with green because all other Irish regiments were Royal!
Almost imediatly regiments started petitioning to have there old facings returned, for instance the Northumberland fusiliers returned to "Gossling Green" in 1900.
In 1902 some changes were made to the tunic. The height of the collar was increased, the cuffs became pointed and false pockets were introduced to the rear skirts.
The helmet had a standard shaped star plate with a centre disk that carried the regimental devices. Line infantry helmets were covered in blue cloth, light infantry, green cloth.
And the rifle is the S.ML.E. with eighteen inch bayonet

I hope that helps.

Agree with all comments by Martin and Mike and can confirm that the figure is a Stadden, one of their hand animated series. Trooper

Looks to me like the "plume' is really the spike bent over- a fairly common mishap with the softer metal older figures are cast in. The repaint of the helmet then covered it. A careful lift with the point of an X-acto blade should free it. Or break it off{eek3}... be gentle.

Thanks all.

You may be right there Mike. I'll have a close look once the paint stripper has done its job.

Thanks for explaining the finer points of the facing colours Martin. I'll use the existing paint as a guide. Was after a particular English regiment so the white facings are appropriate.

Scott

Mike,

Thanks for the advice to go gently- the spike turned up exactly as you suggested it might! I'm thinking that a touch of araldite to stiffen it up wouldn't go amiss as well.

Cheers,

Scott

A couple more questions for Martyn or Trooper.

I have used the original figure as a painting guide and painted the facings white as per an English regiment of the line. A couple of points I'm finding confusing.

Firstly the original figure was painted with an orange centre area to the epaulettes and the rear lower skirt area of the tunic. Should these be gold or yellow?

Secondly, should the tunic have white piping along the edge seam where the front buttons meet? I have seen pictures with and without the piping.

Thanks,

Scott

All of the cloth of the tunic should be the same shade of red. (soundsl ike someone has tried to touch up the paint with the wrong shade!) The piping around the epaulettes, down the front of the tunic and the false pockets at the rear skirt should all be white. Without reference to hand, I believe royal regiments (blue facings) also had white piping to the base of the collar and cuffs.
The full dress "tunic" has seven buttons and a line of white piping to the front, the undress "frock" can have seven or five buttons but doesn't have the piping.

Hi All,
I am looking for STADDEN and LASSET figures from the period late Victorian to WW2, in case you have or knows someone that has sets from these periods please advise me via a pvt note. I would be interested in purchasing them.
Best Regards,
