Stalingrad Winter dio (1 Viewer)

Officers often had custom made articles not available to the rank & file.

There is also evidence here and there of "Field Made" snow camouflage items.

And there's always the opportunity to strip a Russian corpse.

........ Perhaps all the guys in the dio got lucky

Could be???...Sammy

Great post Sammy. I love the dio. Here is 1 of many photos I found.

Seems to me that if I ended up deployed into a winter combat environment, I'd be scrambling and field improvising for snow camo-even stripping the enemy as the opportunity arose...

This pic is purported to be from Oct. 1941 and shows a variety of camo variants-hope it helps:

All three photo's I posted show troops at or captives from Stalingrad none of the ones I've tried to show are wearing captured Russian, or custom uniforms ( see two soldiers second and third from the right in the top photo) all are actually wearing the Army issue two piece reversible parka uniform that has been discussed.

I thought that First Legion had mentioned they were starting to move away from the city fighting and were branching out into the operations that were trying to break through to encircled troops but I could be mistaken. regards Gebhard

I would welcome this move by FL and would hope for a Mainstein-type figure with troops to support operation Winter Storm.

I was referring only to Paulus' 6th Army.

Their operation began in summer and they were issued no winter gear (other than standard greatcoats & wool gloves) according to some accounts of the battle.
* and according to others, there was a drive to collect CIVILIAN winter clothing in Germany and send it to the front - however the supply lines were extended and taxed; there were many priorities and not much got through.

Obviously von Manstein's troops coming to the 6th Army's aid were more likely to have real winter gear - as did some Romanian units.
