Hi There,

I dont have the exact numbers but there were Stug III D models in Africa and there were also Stug III F/8 Models in Greece. Not sure if that helps much but if I get a chance I will dig in my books a little deeper and see if i can get you more numbers and units.

Dave

The Stug III Ausf.F/8 appears to have made it to Africa with 1./Sturmgeschutz-Abteilung 242. Only one battery was shipped (the rest went to the Soviet Union). It was refered to as Selbständige Sturmgeschutz-Batterie "Afrika" and Sturmgeschutz-Batterie 90. The model you've shown is an Ausf.G however.

This information is correct. I believe only 6 were shipped, and two found there way to the bottom of the Mediteranean. I am trying to find pictures, but thus far all are unreliably captioned IMO. Here are two that claimed to be:

Both could very well be a HG stug in Sicily though...

I could have swore I read an article about one of these being raised from the ship it was sunk on a few years back, but it turns out that was from a ship called the Sante Fe in the Black Sea, and it was an ausf. G.

Anyway, the other stug unit you guy's mentioned I think, Sonderverbande 288. They had 3 stugs in N. Africa, but I believe all were lost at Alamein>

Hope this helps some

Thanks fella,s for info and pics, one made it to my AK scene....:)

The photos in this thread of the few long barreled Stugs that made it to North Afrika are the older Ausf. F/8 (note the rectangular gun mantlet). The model you want to display has the late model Ausf G with the Saukopf (rounded) gun mantlet which was introduced February 1944, long after the end of the North Afrika campaign in May 1943. The model also has zimmerit which was not used in North Afrika and was not used on AFVs until September 1943. The Saukopf mantlet and zimmerit indicate the model is a late model Ausf G built between February 1944 and September 1944 and painted for south Russia/Ukraine.
