Now that summer is here, at least in the states, anybody have recommendations in historical fiction? I have seen some ancient Rome series books before and they seem intriguing....I like almost any periods of history: ancient greece/rome, colonial/revolution, civil war, ww I & II. I need a good popcorn/action book to drive me through while burning up on the beach!

Find a copy of Anton Myrer's 'Once an Eagle'. Great story that follows the military career of several people through WW1, WW2, and Vietnam. A superb read. -- Al

The Australian writer ... Stephen Dando-Collins has a list of Roman centric books for leisurely reading. His latest book, Rise of an Empire parallels the movie 300's sequel.

Bernard Cornwells Sharpes series are great with loads of action and pretty good accounts of Pennisular War Battles.

WEB Griffin's Brotherhood of War series covers the lives and careers of several Army Officers from WWII till Vietnam he also did a similar series for the USMC and is doing it for Special Ops and OSS.

Book called Team Yankee Tank Company during WWIII in Europe came out in the late 80's

Clancys early books are pretty good but I haven't read any of his ones on Special Ops.

If you get into any of these series they will take you well into the fall.

Thank you gentlemen for your suggestions!! I will check them all out! Appreciate it very much!

Theyer,

I know you are looking for Historical and all, but I knocked out the following books while on vacation in the past: The Amityville Horror,The Hunger Games Trilogy, and The Old Man and the Sea. Quite a Variety, yes, but if you looking for some page turners those are some good ones.

You didn't list medieval, but my favorites of all time are the books by Sharon Kay Penman - fiction, but very accurate historically. The author's note at the end is always wonderful and tells you exactly where she strayed from history. Highly recommended. The series on teh Angevins and the Sunne in Splendour are my favorites.

Also, Bernard Cromwell's archer series and viking series are great fast reads for summer. I am currently on book three of the viking series

Watch, in the next post, H3A is going to recommend Twilight! hahaha

Just bustin balls buddy - I actually really enjoyed the Hunger games series!

If you haven't read any of Bernard Cornwells novels your missing out, The Sharpes series is classic, yet light read, I would recommend 1356, Agincourt, the gallows thief trilogy, the Grail quest trilogy is super, the Excaliber trilogy, and on and on, true men's books and real page turners!

Try Steven Pressfield's 'Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the battle of Thermopylae'. Very well done. -- Al

ZB,

Ummm....I did not read the Twilight series...like you...Team Whats his face. I think this vacation I am going to read The Maze Runner and The Long Walk by Stephen King. I have not read the latter in years and have been thinking about re-reading it.

ZB your a whoot.

Here's what I decided to pick up for reading:

Thank you for your suggestion Lancer on the Gates of Fire book! Anything Gettysburg is always good reading, not to mention this is written by a professor at Gettysburg College's Civil War Institute, and it's also my Alma mater!

Anything by Allen Guelzo is well worth picking up. The book was awarded the Lincoln Prize this year.
