Does anyone other than Testors make a dullcote? I've always had mixed results with theirs.

yes several companies do...
they usually call it clear flat or clear matte...
Walmart carries 2 or 3 different manufacturers...
I prefer the spray...
it will turn a glossy into a matte...
very easily...
you can reverse it if you want...
if you apply clear gloss...

Tamiya has a matte medium. You can mix it in with the paint to knock the shine down.

There are also products available at hardware stores, and at the craft stores like Michael's, AC Moore, or HobbyLobby. Others have mentioned them, in discussions here over the years. But since I only use DullCote, and the Tamiya matte, I can't cite any brand names for you.

The best flat finish I have ever used is made by Lifecolor.I brush it on but it can be airbrushed.The Tamiya gives a dead flat finish if you get the mix right,but if you use too much the paint will dry with white spots and the only way to go will be to strip the figure down to the metal and start over.You have to experiment some to figure it out.

Yeah, the first time I ever used it, I didn't realize that it's meant to be mixed with another paint, that it's not a clear matte medium. I brushed it on a figure and it looked like thin white acrylic, and dried that way. It wasn't a disaster, but it was a lesson learned. With Tamiya acrylics, you can also get more of a dead-flat matte finish by thinning them with lacquer thinner, instead of Tamiya's proprietary acrylic thinner. I've read comments in scale modeling forums to say that lacquer thinner has that effect with other brands of paint, too, but I haven't tried it with any but Tamiya's. But the effect wasn't that much different from that that you get just from using the matte color thinned with the acrylic thinner, to my eye, so I haven't pursued it.
