I have found that most hobby stores carry Tamiya items at 1/35 scale.

While the Tamiya figures will not work with what I am doing (as I am working in 1/32 scale) I wanted to know if anyone knew whether there other items would work. For example, they sell a box that is nothing but pieces of a "brick wall" or a box of "sand bags" or barbed-wire fences and the like.

These items are fairly inexpensive and (of course) very attractive. However, I am not sure if these items would really work with 1/32 scale dioramas. I am hoping that a brick wall or stack of sand-bags that are 1/35 wont make any difference as they are just items that could be any size in real life. I understand that a house or vehicle that is 1/35 would not work, but a brick wall is technically different.

Has anyone tried to mix these 1/35 items with 1/32 before? If so, did it work?

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it.

You will probably get a lot of different answers on this one !!

I have used the tamiya cook wagon with my 1:32 horses and Britains Zulu figures and they all seem to go together in my eye but others may not agree.

Thanks..! Yeah, I don't see why something like a "brick wall" (a static object) that could be tall or shorter in real life, wouldnt go. But I would love to hear from anyone with an opinion on it.

Sounds like you had success with it. Thanks for the advice.

I must admit that I based my first clay made sandbags on Tamiya's sandbag set and although I made them bigger I have implanted some of them in my walls and nobody has noticed. Again, sand bags came in all differen t sizes from small to really large depending on what they were needed for at the time. Same with bricks which although relatively standardised they did come in all shapes and sizes.

As the britfarmer states its what works for you and you are happy with there will always be the view that it won't work but, having come from kit building into this hobby there is not as huge a difference as some think

There is a company based in the Ukraine, if I'm not mistaken, called MiniArt. Their catalog includes buildings, walls, fences and other items that can be used in dioramas. They also sell models, and I think, plastic figure sets. Check some of the scale modeling forums, like FineScale Modeler's site, and Hyperscale, and Armorama, and you'll find a lot of reviews and builds using MiniArt kits. You might see some pieces that you can use.

Prost!

But also look at the arts & crafts chain stores, like Michael's and AC Moore. Walmart, and the home improvement chain stores, and the dollar stores. It's probably too late now, because Christmas is behind us, but when those places have their Christmas stuff out, you'll find a lot of "Christmas village" type of items that can be adapted to our use, especially foliage and trees, but also fences, walls, street lights, and street/road/walkway mats.

If you go in the days immediately after Christmas, you can find some real bargains, as the stores try to unload their leftover stock.

Prost!

Couldn't agree with you more, Brad, at the last Lodon show ATS had a beautiful little working fountain with four jets of water endlessly recycling all day long, could have been either 1/35th or 1/32nd. Looked great surrounded by some of his Newbury St. civilians. He found that in exactly the way you describe. Trooper

Brad,

I think you have mentioned that before. I appreciate it, and its a great tip.

However, that led me to another problem....which I will quickly mention. I was in a "Target" store and they had a huge "$1 Bin" section. While looking around, I saw that they had some farm buildings (barns, etc) for $1! I figured, that was a heck of a deal as I can prime them white and then paint them however I want (not to mention modify them as well to look war torn).

But, while looking at the barn, I couldnt tell if it would be too small for a 1/32 scale figure. I did my best to guess at it, and figured that for $1 it was worth the risk, so I brought it home.

I havent used it yet, but it is probably too small. However, in light of this, I did start another thread concerning how one could tell what is best for a 1/32 scale (when out and about). I mean, is there a good rule of thumb for that sort of thing? Or should I just keep a measurement on me at all times?? And what measurement would that be?

Anyway, when you are new to this stuff (like I am), learning on the fly can be an expensive mistake....so I am trying to minimize that as much as possible.

As for mixing the 1/35 and 1/32...its good to know that it "can" work. I will have to give it a shot.
