Tarawa (1 Viewer)

Launching from the US carrier 'Bunker Hill', Corsairs prepare to soften Tarawa for a Marine land assault. Robin.

A nice "re-use" of the Akagi, Robin.

What is the (second) Corsair plane, the #122?
What did I miss ... {sm2} {sm2} {eek3}

Now that the K&C has released the USMC "Tarawa" series {sm3} got out two of my books ... specifically detailing the 76 hours battle for this tiny atolls ... to re-read.

1: "Line of Departure" - Tarawa by Martin Russ
2: "One Square Mile of Hell" - The Battle for Tarawa by John Wukovits.

I have another couple dozen WWII Pacific books that discusses the entire Pacific war as well as many other specific WWII Pacific battles.

BUT ... do any of my fellow TreeFroggers suggest any other book on the Tarawa Campaign? :rolleyes2:

Suggestions appreciated.

Get Eric Hammel's '76 Hours', it is excellent. The official USMC monograph, by Stockman (I think) is a must have as well as it has superb maps. You should also get war correspondent Robert Sherrod's 'Tarawa: The Story of a Battle'. He went in with the Marines and his book is considered THE classic account. There is also a recent account called 'Tanks in Hell: A Marine Corps Tank Company on Tarawa' by Gilbert & Cansiere. It is really interesting. -- Al

I'd go with Tarawa; a Hell of a way to die by Derrick Wright, published by Windrow and Greene. Very well written, loaded with excellent photos and artwork, has some good maps as well.................

You are quite welcome, Larry. The USMC monograph is part of a series on the war in the Pacific. There are volumes on all USMC campaigns. James Stockman wrote the Tarawa volume, called 'The Battle for Tarawa'. Hunt around for a good price as original printings can get pricey. Most of the originals are softcover but have multi-color excellent maps. Battery press did a hardbound reprint that is fine but I think the maps are all B/W but I don't remember for sure. At any rate, the monograph is well illustrated, as well. -- Al
