Today's Los Angeles Times Op-Ed section has an interview with Brian Jenkins, who is a terrorism expert with the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California, entitled "Risky Business." I met Brian about ten years ago at the West Coaster; I had recognized him from his appearances on news programs regarding terrorism. He has an interesting background: U.S. Army Special Forces Captain in Viet Nam, a Fulbright Scholar, and currently, the senior advisor to the president of the RAND Corporation. The RAND Cororation is (or was originally) a think tank associated with the U.S. Military and Government. Back in the 1960s, I had the good fortune to take three classes at UCLA taught by RAND Corporation professors as upper division electives towards my degree in Political Science/International Relations. Dr. Bernard Brodie was one of them who wrote the book "Strategy in the Missile Age" and was one of the architects of U.S. nuclear defense policy.
Brian collects Indian Army regiments, among other things, and has bought many of my duplicate Kingcast Indian Army sets. He is trying to have a collection that encompasses a set from each of the Indian Army regiments. I also introduced him to Hiriart's toy soldiers. He and I have discussed ordering special, non-catalog sets from Hiriart covering the countries that fought in the Balkan Wars of the early 20th Century. He placed an order for nine sets, including two double sets, on my current 2010 Hiriart order. To give you an idea of his other collecting themes, he ordered Greek Evzones, a Turkish Artillery Gun Team, Mehal-La Halifina Berber Inf, Italian Ascaris in Somaliland, Spahis Senegalais, and Italian Ascari in Libya. I have attached a photo I took of him at the 2008 West Coaster looking over some of my sets during room trading. If you would like to read the interview it can be found at www.latimes.com/pattasks.
