Thanks Ken - Part 2 (2 Viewers)

Missus Heid came home today with these cute wee guys that I’ve placed at each end of the Troop Review Podium in our small Samurai display.
Of course, they’re Chinese Dragons, and are earmarked as good “statues”, destined to eventually reside in our diminutive Celestial Palace of Heavenly Contemplation display, along with The Imperial Empress Tsu Tzi and all the rest of her hangers-on, (including one, Flashman Esquire).
Meanwhile, they can stay in the Samurai display until they get displaced by my next round of East of India purchases.

Cheers
Harry

Harry, there is seemingly no end to the richness and strikingly colorful nature of your displays. You are an inspiration to many of us I suspect. :)

Love the new Wee dragons, and they look right at home in their temporary residence.

Regards,
MD

I never thought of that, good idea. So here she is on the Walls of Illium - without the fleece.
;)

Well Harry, it seems she is a versatile as she is beautiful.

Matt, any plans for some Napoleonic femme fatales?:D

Oh, MD - now I'm all blushing and embarrassed. How very kind indeed you are to highlight my small attempts at artistic prowess - and license.
Thank you very much for such a lovely response.
Hopefully, the cute wee guy's residence will be relatively temporary.

Sincere and Respectful Regards
H

Matt, never mind Nap femme fatales - although come to think on it - the Empress Josephine and some of her feminine friends might be a good idea.
Any plans for Manga Fantasy Geisha Ninja Cavalry?
:p:p

YES, the Empress Josephine in her boudoir chamber WOULD be a good set to do. Apparently there is a large market for these types of civilian displays...

As for Geisha Ninja Cavalry, I've addressed this elsewhere.

Well? Like, where then? At your factory perchance..??

I’d really like to share with fellow members of this forum, a simply incredible and extraordinary event that occurred recently.

Missus Heid and I have been enjoying (yet another) short holiday.
I've had to attend to certain company business before I return to Thailand tomorrow, so we’re in Hong Kong together this time. While I’ve been doing what I have to do, "My Precious Little Lotus Blossom" has been in 7th Heaven indulging in her 2nd favorite hobby, i.e. shopping.

Anyway, Mr. Ken Clarke of “East of India” fame heard we were in town and invited us out to dinner with his lovely wife, Cynthia, a couple of nights ago. Fair enough says I, Missus H can enjoy her number 1 favorite hobby, i.e. eating out – especially if it’s Chinese, Japanese, Thai, or Vietnamese cuisine – and I’m Scottish enough never to pass up on the opportunity to con someone into paying for the meal.

So how does all this tie in with MPLLB’s 3rd favorite hobby, you may ask? I.e. Collecting Miniature Figurines with an Asian slant. (All three hobby’s being so close in the favorite rankings that 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are pretty much interchangeable, depending on her whim at any particular point in time). Well, read on.

We ended up in an area close to “Central” on Hong Kong Island, colloquially known as “Rat Alley” which is full of open-air restaurants and has a wonderful ambient atmosphere reminiscent of “Colonial Times Now Gone Forever – But Never Forgotten”.
So, an excellent time was had by all four of us. Fantastic al-fresco food, the wine flowing freely and the beer being particularly refreshing. When at the end of the meal, Ken picked up the tab, there was me thinking to myself, “Yeah, done it again H – nice one son”.

Aa-ha, but I’d reckoned without Mister Clarke’s “piece of the resistance” cunning plan he’d had up his sleeve all along. After the dishes were cleared away, and we were finishing off the last of the fine wine, Ken announced that he was going to make a small presentation for both of us. “Oh, darn”, says I to myself, “I’m getting landed with the drinks bill after all”. How wrong could I be? Well, just about 100%, as I hope the following photos will fully illustrate.
He presented us each with an individual set of East of India figures as gifts, (both of them extremely appropriate) – and an extra wee set – to mark the occasion.

If I didn’t know for a fact that Ken’s a “Perfect Gentleman”, I’d be extremely suspicious as to why he thought it necessary to hide his left hand with that piece of packing foam

And I’m not certain that I’m altogether happy about that look of adoration that Mister Clarke is receiving here either – but given the rather special circumstances I’d better let that one go as well

We couldn’t resist setting up the Displaying the Heads Set there and then
PictureHeads_s1.jpg

Ken related a rather interesting story concerning this particular set.
In common with other Warriors down the ages, Samurai’s were extremely concerned that they “Look Their Best” should they fall in battle. In the unfortunate event that this should occur, their Ladies were instructed to, (and the Victors generally allowed them to), “dress” the heads of the slain, ensuring the face was clean (as possible), their hair was properly combed, and so on - and an ID tag would be placed somewhere on the decapitated head so that the winners of any particular battle would know whom they’d vanquished during the subsequent Victorious Displaying of the Heads Ceremony

PictureHeads_s2.jpg

So, interesting story, but how does it tie in with these unique gifts we were given? Well, if any of the slain Samurai happened to be, hmmm let’s say, somewhat challenged in the follicle department, the ID tag would be attached to the ear of the decapitated head.
The ID tag on this one says, in Japanese......KEN SAAN….!!!!

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Ken and Cynthia Clarke very, VERY much for not only treating us to an excellent night out, but also for the kindness and consideration they demonstrated in presenting us with such appropriate and simply wonderful gifts from THE EAST of INDIA COMPANY.

And what’s more – I did manage to wriggle out of having to cover the drinks bill as well……!!!!!!

Harry and Lucy And-A-Saan

You know guys; I’ve been looking at the East of India packaging which is probably the best I’ve seen in the Miniature Figurine business. See the photos below that I took in our hotel room yesterday and bear in mind that I had partially unpacked them for the sake of obtaining decent snaps;

As you can see, you even get a little certificate with the larger sets and the packaging is almost like a chocolate presentation box – and we all know how delicate the contents of those kinds of boxes are.
 :) :)

And then I got to thinking about how toy makers package their products, so I dug out these photos which I took around 3 years ago when we were still living in Dubai. As you can see, when the figure was delivered, the paint on the collar and lower part of the figurines face was flaked off. Now, I’ve no idea how this could’ve happened. Maybe some customs official dropped the figure – who knows? But I would certainly suggest that being simply sandwiched between two bits of foam and then stuck into a small card box is somewhat sub-standard packaging compared to the photos above.

Fortunately, I was able to mix some acrylics that matched the flesh tones and was able to repair the flaked paint on the face and also the collar of my Flashman figure – but it’s a sobering thought that despite the expense of the figures we all buy, this kind of thing can still happen.

Harry

I’ve been wondering how I could display our latest East of India figures to full advantage, especially the excellent Smoking & Eating sets – as usual, I’d rather do something different rather than just planting them in a standard R&R camp scenario. Then I remembered that the two sets below are going to be released pretty soon, and hey – I reckoned that removing the Toy Soldier figures and replacing them with the EoI figures would make for a pretty interesting and unique display.

hk175.jpg

So, I had kinda decided to buy the two new sets and go ahead with the plan.
However, as we were spending our last day together here in Hong Kong and strolling through the local street markets, imagine our pleasant surprise when we chanced upon the perfect model Sampans we could use for our new display. And the even better news for us was that we got them for a ¼ of the catalogue price of the new items I’ve shown above….!!!!
So I bought 3 of them – which was still a good bit less than the cost of ONE of the Toy Soldier examples that are being released soon – and that I’m not going to bother buying now. Here’s some quick snaps of them that I took earlier today along with a couple of EoI figurines to give an idea of the scale – I think they’re going to work well with the seated and crouching EoI figurines;

Sampan4s.jpg

Of course, I need to remove the figures that come with them, and they will need some extra work to bring them up to a level worthy of being displayed along with the EoI miniature figurines – but then so would’ve the Toy Soldier examples – and at that kind of price differential, I reckon we can’t go wrong if I buy a few more of them next time I’m transiting Hong Kong.
They’ll even work with the K&C FoB RN Ratings I obtained last year to display along with some of our SOHK collection.
Happy Days.

Harry, Nice little floatation devices aren't they.

Where are you going to put all this stuff?

Jeff

Harry thanks for sharing your adventure with us and your time spent with Ken and his wife – awesome!
That was very generous of Ken. Great photos!

The EoI boxes are my favorites as well – I’ve got most of the Army of Oda Nobunaga.

Well Jeff,

I wouldn't repeat it here, but this morning Lucy did suggest where I could "put all that stuff".... ....when she realised SHE was humping it all the way across the Hong Kong border with Shenzhen by bus, then catching an internal flight up home to Dalian tomorrow....:( :(.
I did give her an extra HK$2000 just in case she gets hit for overweight luggage charges. If that's not enough backsheesh moolah, then she'll just have to chuck some of her own new purchases away - I'm afraid, B'Gad....!!!!
:p :p

Aye well, so have I......now.
Thanks for the kind comments. Yeah, the past week has been simply....AMAZING....!!!!

Well folks, our night out with Mr & Mrs Clarke took place last Tuesday.
On the Wednesday night, we were reduced to going out with this pair of reprobates....!!!! These snaps were taken during yet another completely fantastic night out with a certain Mr & Mrs "Someone Else" up Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island. We (somehow) landed in the rather up-market "Peak Cafe Restaurant".
It's a complete and utter mystery to me how we managed to con our way into darkening the door of the place? Think it was cos business was a bit slack when we turned up, otherwise the proprieter might have asked us to go and grace MacDonalds or KFC with our presence instead....
:p:p
Eeeeerm, I'm the rather handsome chappie in the last photo.....Who managed to wriggle out of paying the bill - yet again....!!!!
:):) ;)
