The 18th Century (1 Viewer)

konrad, just received my first shipment of grenadiers..... they're really nice, good casting and paint-jobs. i even like the boxes that they come in, throw-backs to a gentler time. next week their officer and nco, along with others will arrive. i knew i shouldnt have started this cause now they're all consuming. once again, thanks for informing me about them, broke in staten island, andy

Hi Andy,
congratulations to your first sets of this series. You might have started something there, that is not going to end anytime soon ;).
But they are very nicely made, no doubt about it and well worth the price.
I understand you are collecting mainly the FIW period. Do you have other figures you can recommend? Do you collect both matte and glossy or different scales?
Konrad

hey konrad, as a child of the fifties i grew up on marx, timmee, lido. then a little later britains detail and airfix. as i've mentioned on another thread, the french and indian war has always fasinated me. i would always try to convert plains indians into eastern woodland tribes to battle my marx 60mm frontiersmen. in the late 70's while in nyc, i discovered 'the soldier shoppe' on 88th st. and lex. and my journey into serious metal collecting of anything to do with the F&I war began. unfortunatly, pieces were few and far between. had some I/R custom painted pieces and a few glossy sets (boxes long gone so i dont remember the manufacturer. in the 90's found out about toy soldier shows, and started attending. bought quite a few glossy indians and colonials from john updyke (minimen) and semi-round smaller figures from another manufacturer. but like i said, few and far between. then conte and frontline/jenkins came out with their matte rangers and indians and the race was on. the john jenkins designs are far and away the best matte figures ever done. as far as glossy, 'the toysoldiergallery' has some rogers rangers and woodland indians that are pretty nice. and now the britains redcoats and their new F&I war line, life couldnt be better.

That is some good advise, KV,
I used to under-estimate the power of the glossy figures and now I got hooked. It's fun though :D:D:D
Konrad

I started on glossy then restarted on matte and now I have come full circle.

Hi Paulo,
glad to find another member who's going for the glossy part of collecting. Well, with the Napoleonic range and WWI you will hardly reach the end at any given time. Particularly the Napoleonic Range doesn't seem to end. There are sooooo many figures available.
I tried to look up Dorset today and saw that they have several sets that would be interesting, like especially minutemen and also British troops but I can hardly find pictures of their sets.
Also, is there a dealer in the U.S. who sells the Dorset figures?
While searching I found out that Marlborough as well did some figures for the 18th century period here in the U.S.
Again, is there a dealer available here in the states?
Thanks for your post and talk to you later.
Konrad

Dorset in the US? Found this dealer: www.toysoldierco.com

Best wishes,
Paulo

I ordered my Dorset Naval figures from them...only problem is that not every Dorset piece is in stock and can take up to 8 weeks to get...Michawl

Which Naval Figures did you get from Dorset and can you provide a picture? I have been tempted to purchase some of their Navy figures but have never seen their products. Any help?
Lou

I have just ordered a couple of Britains 1st foot grenadiers. This means I have just succumbed to FIW::(;):p. And guess who is to blame: the gentleman that posted these great photos on this thread:D. My wife is going to talk to him:D:D Well, really Mr. Tommy Atkins and Tradition of London are also to blame...Further news when the grenadiers reach headquarters...

Hi Michael,

I think you have done a magnificent job with your gun boat. It looks grand! I also love the crew you selected for it. Thanks for showing us your fine work!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

That is a fantastic gunboat.
Well done Michael

They have arrived at my door ( the FIW Redcoats ). They are marvellous, wonderful, outstanding, beautiful, colorful, I am at a loss for words:p. Let me see: I love the painting and sculpting, the detail, the impeccably done faces, eyes, lips. This to me is gloss at its best, realistic, detailed, well proportioned, great reproduction toy soldiers. Colorful, well done and glossy, a deadly combination:rolleyes:.Thank you Britains for these little pieces of joy, this FIW series has become a priority for me.
By the way, a question for Britains: will you be doing a number of soldiers for each regiment, like 5 for the Franches Marines, 5 Indians, Rogers Rangers and so on? And an Indian canoe? I'll stay tuned, that's for sure;).

Hi There!
I am so very happy that you liked these figures. The 1755 Grenadier was the first Classic Redcoat I sculpted for new 1st Gear/W.Britain Co. a little over two years ago. This figure proved so popular that we have added the Officer, NCO, Ensign with the Guards Regimental Colour, Pioneer, Drummer and Fifer. We still will add the Ensign with Kings colour and possibly one last surprise figure! We hope to add additional figures from other regiments including British Line units, French, Colonials and Native Americans. We plan on adding a few new poses for various units from catalog to catalog and this will take time...but it will also be easier to manage from the consumer's point of view. The drill and parade poses lend themselves to duplicate figures to build small displays, but the 45th and 15th Regt of Foot figures could use NCOs and Musick too!
It sounds like you made a bit of a 'catch up' purchase...are you building a 'section' of a company to display? I have found some great watercolors from this period to use as backdrops for my figures. These can be scanned from one of my books and printed to apply to a section of cardstock for an easy display. If I can squeeze some extra time when I get back from London I will try and take an image or two to share!

Hi,
I bought the the Officer, NCO, Ensign with the Guards Regimental Colour, Pioneer, and the first Grenadier. I am planning on getting a number of figures per unit, if possible ( Indians, French,Colonials ), and the artillery piece is also on my wish list. As you say it will take time but time will surely make it easier for me to build this collection at a more moderate pace, as you also say. I am also very keen on flagbearers, so the ensign with Kings Colour would be most welcome. I'll be around:D.

Keep up the good work and once again many thanks,
Paulo Mendes
