The 27th Anuual East Coast Toy Soldier Show and sale Sunday November 1, 2009 (1 Viewer)

Not to mention they RAISED the tolls awhile ago from 35 cents to 50 cents and from 70 cents to 1.00; what a con, they pull the same crap up here in Massachusetts with the Mass Pike and their "tolls".................

"Yes We Can," George! :D

I think that with the extra hour of sleep sat night:D I will go to this show. I think I can make it in 2-2 1/2 hours. I am up early for work during week so will just get up early and drive to the show.

With the show currently in progress with a few hours remaining hoping will get not only the comments on the show but photos to go along with them later today and and tomorrow from those of the forum who attended it.

I just returned from the show. Fortunately my route didn't take me anywhere near the NYC marathon.
The only new products shown were from John Jenkins who was in attendance.
As shown already on this forum the Khartoum release was quite impressive and the new Jacobite hand to hand sets are great.
There were many dealers and collectors offering K&C, W. Britains, Collector's Showcase, JJ and Frontline.
A good offering of "antiques" and small makers but nothing sensational.
I picked up some old Trophy sets, Mulberry, Fusilier and Conte.

Conte was at the show selling off older sets. He did have some of his new Zouaves and said they are coming out in January. Some new Zulus and plastic Foreign Legion were displayed as well.

Attendance didn't appear too healthy and by the time I left many dealers were offering discounts or telling people to "make an offer".
There is a lot of K&C and Britains inventory floating around.
One rumor I heard from several dealers is that EOI will not be around for long.
If not true they should address this.

I am looking forward to other comments.

I also attended the East Coast Show. This is the second year for this show for me. Traveling 80 East from the Lehigh Valley area, there was a lot of road construction and the local exits were all closed. I ended up getting off at route 46 and stopped at the local P.D. station for the directions to get me squared away.
I didnt think the show was overly crowded. There was a lot of business at Minutemans tables. I bought some First Legion singles, Stalingrad series. I wish he would have had one of those FL Stugs that I could have checked out.

I drove to the show today. The drive up & home was not good but I thought the show was excellent. I saw John Jenkins and his new pieces. I do not collect JJD but still was still good to listen to what he had to say. I also saw George(Warrior) from Minuteman. As always he had a great setup on his tables. I stopped at Hobby Bunkers tables and took pictures of the new Figarti landing craft. WOW is all I can say wish I had the money & the space. Well probably find the money but what would I do with it. I got WS37 Krupp truck mint with box. I had one but it was repaired so now I have 2:D. Also got AN12:D:D:D:D. And finally got LAH04 with LAH05 with box. My only regret is that I did not have more money but overall a great show. I will go back next year.

Hi, all!

It was a good show, relatively well attended, though the surge was from the opening at 9AM till around 12:30 or so. No doubt many wanted to get home to tune in to watch the Eagles punish the Giants.

Here are some pics:

The doors open!

At least it wasn't raining, while we were standing in line.
I know, I know, you can order the tickets ahead of time, but I decided a couple of years ago that it wasn't worth it to me. I usually get there right at the opening, and it's not that big of a deal to wait.

The big thrill for me was getting to meet John Jenkins in person, at George's tables. I didn't know he was going to be there, and we talked about our experiences painting, sculpting and casting. John is a really nice fellow, and I'm reminded once again that that is one of the great things about our hobby, the people we get to meet and know. Shame on anyone for staying planted in front of the PC and never getting out!

Here is a shot of John's "Death of Gordon" prototype:

2JohnJenkinsDeathofGordon.jpg

I have to say, this is John's best piece ever, in both the quality of the sculpting and the painting. And I told him, too. I think the figures are well-proportioned, and that with this group, he's gotten closer to the quality even of the Russian castings. John had a pair of resin masters of a Red Indian figure from the FIW line, that exhibits the same quality. I'd buy either of these sets, that's how impressed I am.

George himself was at the center of a bustle of activity, as he always is when I see him at the shows. I snapped some pics of some of the displays he had out today:

Brisk business at Ed Gries' tables:

7BriskbusinessatEdGriestables.jpg

Ed had tables along nearly half the long wall of the hall, and had something for everyone (I got a Del Prado Austrian cuirassier officer, 1796, which I will backdate for the SYW).

Hey, is that Richard Conte?

At the right of the picture is the show's organizer and proprietor of Vintage Castings, Bill Lango. Congratulations, Bill, on another successful show!

Some re-enactors were on hand to talk to the patrons. Here is a member of Colonel Lamb's artillery regiment:

and a Pennsylvania rifleman:

There were also members of a British grenadier company on hand, but I didn't get any pics of them :(

More to come...

Here, Mike Ferguson and his lovely wife man their tables:

11MikeFergusonstable.jpg

Mike is a fellow member of the MFCA, and also the proprietor of Soldiers Unlimited. You may have seen his sets, including a series of a British officers' mess at Christmas. He also was an agent for Rose Miniatures and Stadden, and helped me get started with castings, when I started in the hobby.

Here's a shot of AeroArt, with collector and diorama builder Alan Golden manning the tables:

Alan has built some fantastic dioramas with King and Country figures as his raw materials, including an Old Guard detachment marching off, and Crusaders storming a Saracen stronghold (see the 2009 MFCA show thread).

Here was another treat--you may remember an article in a recent issue of "Toy Soldier & Model Figure", featuring ships for 54mm figures, scratchbuilt by Joe DeMarco. Well, he had a table at the show, and had some of his boats for sale:

14ShipsbyJoeDeMarco1.jpg

I got to talk to him about building the boats, and we talked about scratchbuilding.

Here's his Nile gunboat:

and a USN subchaser:

Joe also has a series of figures depicting the various state police of some states, and he trades on eBay, too.

Here's a shot some of the figures offered at the show by Carl Hoegermeyer/Quatermaster Corps:

That's Carl at the back of the shot. I got to talk to him for a while, swapping ideas about displaying some of these sets.

More random shots...

These are some pictures of the figures on display by Soldier Boy Miniatures:

He combines commerically available castings with kitbashed and scratchbuilt figures, and has civilian subjects, as well as military. Some more:

and this only scratches the surface:

More Russian figures, offered by Sergei Ilyaschenko/Lead Army:

Sergei is a really nice guy to talk to, though he, too, is usually bustling at these shows, which is good to see.

OK, who said that plastic figures get no respect?

27Whosaysplasticgetsnorespect1.jpg

I estimate that fully a third of the items on sale were plastic figures of one kind or another. And that actually has been the case for some time. I recall a time at our show, when there might have been just the Marx Man, and maybe one or two other dealers, who traded in plastic figures. But that was perhaps as long ago as 2000.

Here's some more plastic:

28Moreplastic.jpg

29Plasticvariety.jpg

and smaller figures by HaT, Esci, Zvezda, etc:

30Plasticsmallscale.jpg

and figures of all kinds:

31Figuresofallsizes.jpg

That was just a small sampling of what was available, I didn't even get shots of Belle & Blade (historical and military-themed movies), or the book vendors, or some of the bigger vendors who are fixtures at many of the shows here in the East Coast, like Ron Ruddell/London Bridge (who is retiring and will sell the business by the end of the year); Roy Haradin/Toys of Yesteryear; Rich Dutkin/Dutkin's Collectibles; the Russos of Stockade Miniatures; and the Murphys of Hobby Bunker. Not to mention LeMans, Wagons of Wood, Britains, Osprey...

Well, I said it earlier in this thread, if you can make it to this show, you should visit it at least once.

Prost!
Brad

Brad,
Thanks for the posts and pictures, almost like I was there. Unfortunately, CCD delivery and pickup ruled the day for me:eek: Thanks for stepping up and the multitude of great photos.

I was at the show yesterday. got to meet John Jenkins and talk with him for little bit. So overall it was an excellent show.

Thanks for the report and pictures Brad. Look like you had a great time. I really do need to try and get to a toy soldier show at sometime. It looks as though there are lots of gems and hidden treasures to be found.

Wow, Jeff, great report and photos. I am really impressed with Joe DeMarco's incredible ships. I would love to buy one of those for the museum. Fantastic stuff! I wish I could have attended, but I had a family issue that had to take precedent. You report really picked me up after what has been a brutal week. Thank you.
