Following the devastating success of the opening stages of Operation Bagration, the 5th Guards Tank Army encircled Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania in early July. Hitler had declared the city a "Fester Platz", committing a large garrison to a static and hopeless defense. On July 12th, the Soviets begin their assault...........

The Fuhrer eventually relented and allowed the garrison to attempt a breakout. As units began to fight their way out of the city, others are given the task of holding off the Russians...........

Despite stiff resistance, the Russians were able to drive home their assault before the entire garrison could get out of the doomed city. Only 3,000 troops were able to get out to fight another day, the rest were killed or captured............

Thanks Louis and Ray, I'm always trying to top my last diorama and am always on the lookout for new additions to add to my collection..

Once again George anothe one of your great WWII battle scenes you've put togeather. I'm sure it's was a nice break in setting it up vs setting up for a show giving you some play time.....The Lt.

Great dio, George! I like your treatment for plowed fields.

Prost!
Brad

Thanks Lt, Rod and Brad; I like that field too..........

Another great looking dio. Man you sure keep busy "playing" with your collection. Thanks for sharing once again.

Mike

Thanks Mike; the toy soldier show season will be here full force before you know it, so I'm trying to enjoy things now as I will be working quite a bit later..........

Very cool stuff George. Who makes those figures? I've been looking at painting some 28mm WW2 but looking for good figures that are realistic looking. Some of the figures I've looked are kind of dwarfish looking.

Thanks JR; my collection is 20mm, 1/72nd scale. I'm with you on the 28mm figures, many of the WWII figures I've seen are very cartoonish, the 20mm figures are better sculpted IMO.

Good luck tomorrow, although I doubt you'll need it, should be a walkover. But then again, I thought the same thing last year, so proceed with caution..................

Next up is the Battle of the Bulge......
