The Civil War: Then and Now (1 Viewer)

‘The South figured out how to use slavery to support the war – for every soldier on the frontline, there were seven slaves backing them up. Lincoln had to dismantle that machine, and the way to do that was to promise them their freedom.’

With his "declaration of emancipation" Lincoln dismantled absolutely nothing, in fact after it no slave left his place nor rebelled against their masters and the war continued exactly as before...

Well, as this is a forum, I am commenting a part of the article you put here. As usual, you don' t enter the topic of my post, but you refuse it with scorn, I understand that the truth hurts.

You must be having a bad day after what happened at the South Carolina state house today. It was about time.

I think what happened there was very politically convenient in the wake of a terrible tragedy, yet it is the flag that is taking the brunt of it? How idiotic is it to protest a symbol yet completely ignore the obvious insanity of a deranged individual. I just don't believe a flag had anything to do with this idiot murdering people. Look at Timothy McVeigh (Federal Bldg Oklahoma), that idiot and his cohort militiamen flew the US Flag for "their" cause, would that be a reason to do away with it, our National Flag? Additionally, you have a whole other group of loons who fly the Gadsden Flag and have no idea what "Don't Tread on Me" means.

My point is you can't control the ignorance, racisim and nuttiness of people or what they gravitate to. The flag in SC sits atop a monument, they removed it from the Capitol awhile ago which was the correct course of action in that it is a historic relic.

I am sure the next call will be a ban on assault rifles as it was the rifle's fault, not the idiot who pulled the trigger.

Just my nickel's worth.

If you wish to start a thread on the topic, I will be more than glad to discuss it with you and show you the weaknesses in your argument but I just don't think this is the thread for it.

Brad:

Great article and kudos to the creativity of the photographer.

Crazy that the suite box at Ford's Theatre almost looks identical today.

Keep it silly

Chris,

I think someone posted here awhile ago the same sort of thing for WW I or WW II. It was kind of neat.

It's pretty amazing to see a tree, a living thing, still there that has witnessed some historical moment. Something standing in place for 150+ years. When I visited Dallas a couple years ago, I went to Ruth Paine's house where Oswald spent the evening before the assassination playing with the kids on her lawn under an oak tree. That tree is still there. Believe it or not some people try to steal the rocks seen in civil war photos on the Gettysburg battlefield. Fortunately most are too heavy. Many of the buildings may appear the same, but most have been restored. There is often little that is original. I seem to recall the entire floor of Ford's theater collapsed or burned. The entire interior has been renovated.
