The Conquest of America... (1 Viewer)

Hi Mike,
Oddly it is hard to find detailed images of Dos Pilas. Try this link,https://imgur.com/r/papertowns/W5rNayv

Note that the final stages of Dos Pilas the leadership built stone walls that seem to be topped with a wooden palisade. Will root around for more information.

Here’s some more Mike, hope they are useful. It is a huge complex, very impressive. Regards

Howard...

it is hard to find references of the Mayan or Aztec structures which is kind of a mystery in itself...
the structure in your pics is unreal huge...
can't even imagine how labor intensive it was...
I think it's just too big of a project for me to take on...
if I finished it...it would dwarf my collection...and I wouldn't even know how to display it in my home...
thanks for the pics!

These photos are of a replica of the city in the visitor center.

Hi Mike,

Howard's photographs are of the pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan. Teotihuacan is contemporary with the Classic Maya say 400-650 CE. There are lot of online images of Teotihuacan.

If you are interested in Aztec capital, then Google Tenochtitlan. The Templo of Mayor was the major Aztec temple in Tenochtitlan, actually a twin temple dedicated to the gods of rain and war. link, https://www.pinterest.com/pin/303641199873376184/

Another link to good material, https://www.fusd.net/cms/lib/CA5000.../118 - Aztec Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan.pdf

Near the Templo of Mayor archaeologists have found a large skull rack. Here is a good link on that find, https://www.sciencemag.org/news/201...l-massive-scale-human-sacrifice-aztec-capital

Best wishes,
Benjamin

these are great models and pics you guys are pulling up...
it's hard to believe we're talking 700 AD...
and these were built by what we would consider an uncivilized community...
I remember reading somewhere...
that the Spaniards were amazed at the size of the population and architectural achievements...
of the Aztec Empire when they first saw it...
rivaling anything they had seen in Europe...
of course that was in the 16th century...

Mike you are correct. The Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, reminder the Spanish of Venice. The Spanish were also awed by the Aztec marketplace in this community.
The Spanish were able to defeat the Aztecs because the latter has lots of enemies who joined Cortes.
Best wishes,
Benjamin

Benjamin...

yes...you are right...the Texcaltecs certainly helped defeat the Aztecs...
the Spaniards were too small in numbers to do it by themselves...
but the largest number of fatalities (15 million) to the Aztecs...
were attributed to the pestilence..."cocoliztli"...as the Aztecs named it...that the Europeans infected them with...

Mike you are absolutely correct about disease.

Are you going to try your hand at making something akin to Dos Pilas?

Best wishes,
Benjamin

Benjamin...
not at the moment...
I'm a little intimidated by the project...
the only reason I would even attempt it is if John doesn't release his version...
I'm sure nothing I could make would be better than John's temple...
I'm waiting to see what he does on it...

It would be good if John made the call so we all could move forward one way or another. Originally there was talk of second version also, but this is coming up 2 years ago now and with rising postage, suggests its a thing of the past. Shame. Robin.

The temple is a essential feature for portraying the wonder of the Aztecs culture. Whether John releases his version of the structure, we will be waiting with anticipation and if not it won't be a great disaster. Some might try to build some sort of building and I have seen others display their own bought creations. I had a go of making my display more interesting early on when developing my own diorama. It was a small elevation to make the figures stand out. It has been replaced now with the city entrance but I still need to do something behind this. I'm looking forward to completing this project and must get around to updating photos of the diorama as it has undergone another extension and more figures added. Greg. Old photos.

Fantastic Greg. At worst you put a photo backdrop of a temple ,{sm4} ok I know this would be the same. I too want John’s version. Robin.
