I have a friend who owns a graphics art company. I find photos that can be used as a backdrop (that is the hard part). They need to be high resolution and at a certain scale so when blown up, they are the right size for the armour pieces in the foreground. This desert backdrop is actually a photo of Mars and the Mars Rover taken from the Mars Lander. The Mars Rover was removed from the photo and replaced with more background and the landscape color corrected to match a north Africa rock desert. The short horizon on Mars gives that hilly look of the Tunisian desert. Then the photo is blown up to fit the back of a 23 inch wide display case shelf and also be at the correct scale for the armour pieces in the foreground.

This background will now be recoloured to more closely match the mat in the foreground but still be a few shades lighter for a distance effect. A little more green in the near background. Second light source to remove shadows cast by left side of palm tree and tank rider by bicycle onto the backdrop.

There is no road on the desert mat. The desert mat sent to me was without the road I asked for, but that will be my next mat from Build-a-rama. I will eventually have several desert ones anyway.

The other two mats with a road (Winter and Medium Grass) have the road in the same place running in a straight line from the extreme left of the top edge to the bottom of the right edge. The roads will NOT line up if put together. (For any wise guys, yes I know the mat can be reversed so the road runs the other way :p )

My mats are Build-a-rama's standard size 24 in. X 12 in. which fit my shelves. But as my glass cabinets are side by side, I will want some 2 cabinet or 3 cabinet wide displays so at some point I will ask Mark Vuncannon for a 48 in X 12 in mat with a road and cut it in half. I suspect he can make double long mats with a road or alternatively, make 24 X 12 mats with the road running across the middle or at the front or back edges of the mat so the roads will line up. But Mark did me a favour by doing the mats I wanted, so I do not want to put words in his mouth.

BTW, the roads are the correct size for 1/30 armour. Am very pleased with the mats.
