This is so true. The version at Kursk, the Ferdinand, had no hull machine gun for close in defense. I remember reading, somewhere, that the crew was forced to shoot down the barrel of the main armament if they wanted to use a MG for defense. This couldn't have worked well or been very effective. After Kursk, this weakness was addressed by adding a hull MG to the surviving Ferdinands. The revamped Ferdinand was renamed the Elephant. -- Althe Elefant only had one ineffecive machine gun which made it vulnerable to infantry intack like in the battle of Kursk
