As a collector of St. Petersburg figures painted by some of the top artists in Russia I don't throw the word around lightly but I can only describe the new WWII figures by First Legion as connoisseur grade. Both the sculpting and the painting are astonishing for the price and I don't know how First Legion does it.

I will talk about scale and detailing a little later but for now I thought I'll simply share some pictures.

Let's start with with a picture of 3 months TS budget:

The packaging is excellent and there was no damage to any of the pieces:

I had limited rubble diorama pieces to work with for this photo essay so Matt, please release some Stalingrad set pieces:

No insult to anyone else but these are some really great photos. The Russians look tremendous, very realistic. Packaging looks very nice too. Yup, that would kill a lot of budgets :)

Wow!!!:eek: That is one fine set of photos mate. I can see why you like these so much.;)

Frank, that is an awesome set of photos (kudos to you) of a jawdropping set of figures (Kudos to FL). Like Brad, I think the Russians in particular, look fantastic. Great advert for FL.
Cheers for taking the time for the review and pics.

Looks great! I have to say I am certainly jealous....

As others have said, excellent work on the photographs as well, especially the one pic of all 5 Russians together. It is obvious they are about to take back another little piece of Stalingrad!

This might be strange thing to say but I like the painting of the bases. The colours have very earthy tones.Someone said these are 1/32 scale is this true .I would be more likley to buy them if they were 1/30 scale.Simmo.

Not again. Maybe we should make the whole scale discussion a sticky?

I don't care what scale they are as long as its consistent throughout this and subsequent releases in the now established WWII range. I have to agree with Frank and say they're the absolute best WWII figures I've ever seen as well - and although I don't have any (yet), I can say that quite truthfully as I've held these figures in my hand and studied them intensely under a magnifying glass.
Very well done indeed First Commissar and I look forward to your China-Burma-India releases, err, eventually, err, if you do them, err, thanks.
:p:p....:confused::confused:

Cheers :)

Brilliant photos Frank. I can see details in your photos not visible even in the FL advertising. My opinion of the FL Stalingrad sets has gone up some more. And the bases really add to the piece.

I like the figures and the tank but what scale.I only post and read on K&C thread but have had interest in Russian soliders so why the big deal.Ask a question would like a answer .Simmo.

There has been some serious debate over this in a few other threads on the Stalingrad pieces and became a sensitive issue with a number of people, but that seems to have simmered down. You may want to read the other threads, but the gist of them is that the figures are smaller than K&C and will not go well with them. The painting style is quite different too.

Frank.............those really are some good looking figures,

FL is doing some amazing work.......thanks for sharing.

Terry is quite correct. The short answer is they are 1/30 and they are smaller than K&C.;)

Confused? I diplomatically avoided mentioning the scale, because that was what a good part of the debate was about - what scale they were :D. But the FL figures are noticeably smaller than K&C. FL says the Stug is 1/30. It is not yet available to compare.

It is impossible to summarize the nuances of the debate - you will just have to read the threads. Louis Badolato does a detailed comparison of the FL figures vs. K&C, HB and Figarti figures (he has them all) and there is some debate over his review as well.

Agreed that there are many details but the short answer is still what I noted. One of the nuances is that "scale" is useless as a figure measurement unless you set a common size for the "real persons" you are representing. Among other things in that thread, I noted the different scales for both that would result from those different assumptions. Vehicles are easy since they usually have a verifiable actual size. That said, the pictures of the figures fit the pictures of the stug so if the stug is 1/30, the figures are 1/30.;)

I don't know anything about scale, and who is right or wrong in calculating it, but these figures are about the same size as the figures that come with 21st Century, which are advertised as 1:32 scale. They are definitely considerably smaller in height, and in size of appendages, than any of the figures advertised as 1:30 scale today.

Having seen these photos and read the comments about the scale, the old adage comes to mind, "it's not quantity but quality."
