Last night one of the "odd" channels (like Epix or MGM HD or such) showed the 1965 film "The Glory Guys". Of course too much of the film was Tom Tryon and Harve Presnell fighting over Senta Berger, however this movie is one of the few to depict the US Army cavalry in combat in the mid-19th cenury manner. Troops dismounted, horse handlers to the rear and engaging with volley fire with Springfield carbines. The end battle is obviously based on Custer's last action in Montana, but set in the American southwest. Still a fun movie for fans of the Cavalry.

I'm glad you noticed the tactics used in what was a low budget version of every other cavalry film. That stood out fro me as well.

Did you notice James Caan as an Irishman? (Pvt. Anthony Dugan)

Major Dundee also came out in 1965 directed by Sam Peckinpah who wrote the screen play for Glory Guys.

Major Dundee is still one of my favorite all-time movies. Great soundtrack, near constant action, well written and acted out. Got to love the last battle against the Frenchies..Michael

I've been playing the DVD with the extended scenes and alternative music track. Pretty good. A friend pointed out a 1980-90s 25mm wargame scenario based on Major Dundee where you get extra points for quotes from the movie.
