I finally made a shelf display of my Ultimate Fort Apache set. This has been in my mind for a long time. I had bought the Barzso Fort and the add ons and they remained in their boxes unopened until today.

That is way cool. You have too much fun. I like the conversions also. Good job, as always. How about some aerial shots? Or more close ups?
Btw, I did try your trick of painting up already painted figures to a solid color to match solid color ones. I got some of the Britains Indians at a responsible price. I noticed that they are different from the ones of the 70s. Some don't have the detail (no pun intended) that they used to have, and some have been redesigned. And they don't paint up that well.

Joe - as always GREAT photos! So glad you like to the fort...

Love the way all the various makes of soldiers blend in so well!

Jim

You did a fantastic job sculpting this fort, Jim. I keep thinking that you and Ron must be able to hack into my playset daydreams to create stuff I've always wanted. This set reminds me of the fort on Tom Sawyers Island at Disneyland.
The only problem is space to play with it. I never did get it set up on my big table. Now I doubt I ever will. I lucked out when I found the backdrop tucked way in the back corner of my basement behind a bunch of empty Conte boxes. Usually shelf displays don't photograph so well, but this one does.

Keep up the great work. Keep on tempting me beyond my means. Keep on putting stress on my marrriage (just kidding...sort of).

Take care.

Joe

Great stuf Joe. I was tempted to do Plains wars in 54mm plastics a while ago.
Hunting down vintage figures and converting seemed like a lot of fun. Still pondering. My friends { ALL 2 OF THEM} also want to do the period, but argue on what scale.54mm plastic is a non starter with them though.

Your Zulu thread with the sacking of the camop at Islandawana was awesome. Inspired me to collect some more ZULU but I restrained myself and now the impulse has passed.

I really enjoy all the pictures. The conversions are great. Thanks. Keep posting please.

Very nice display. I've always liked this subject, and you have done it very well.

Great photos and Fort Apache Joe. I wish I had more room for a display like yours. I think I reached my limit on room and cases without being evicted.^&grin Thanks for posting photos and Jim's fort sculpting is top notch. John

Joe, as always I am fascinated by your ability to assemble great displays and then photograph them. You needed to be around in the heyday of the great Marx playsets. I never had a Fort Apache but always wanted one. Your display is very inspiring! It makes me want to convert a bunch of cavalry troopers :)

I've always found it ironic that Fort Apache never seems to involve actual Apaches!

Amazing!

I've always loved the look of the unpainted plastic soldiers on a colorful background. There's just something about it, the mix of the childhood toys, with the reality of background.... I don't know, but it's art.

Thanks for posting these pictures. I've got a new computer background now!

I agree with Beau, there is a totally different feel to the unpainted plastic figures that can't be matched with the painted plastic or metal. My "Fort Apache" and my Marx Civil War "Battleground" play set were the toys that I remember the most.

This display is really wonderfully done -- super job!!!!!!
