I just got a look of the new K&C Hessians - WOW-O-WOW !!

They are great ! Check out Treefrog's AWI section of King and Country and you can get a better look at each one individually - really cool !

With all these British reinforcements - whats coming up to balance this war out?

I agree, they are impressive. There's a lot of character in these figures, especially the two chubby officers and the flag bearer. And you gotta love those helmets. I was thinking of collecting a set of the Cold Stream Guards next, but now I'm seriously considering the Hessian's instead. I just wonder if having a bunch of figures in those red & white striped pants together might look strange.

What's coming up? I sure wish the old continentals would be retired, so we could get some new higher quality colonial regulars. For that matter, I'd like to see the old Red Coats updated, too. They are showing their age and I'd like to see some new ones come out with white pants not that light cream color. I don't think it's going to happen though. I think Andy will continue going in new directions. I have to admit I hadn't thought of the Hessians but it was a great idea.

I have already started saving my money for the Hessians. I really like the new pose, "Making Ready". This figure will make a wonderful third rank for the two firing figures.

Hello,
You may want to hold your horses on KC's Hessians. They look great, however, they may not be historically accurate. I checked May and Embleton's British Army in North America 1775-1783 and Troiani's Soldiers in America and found no evidence for Hessians wearing red and white striped pants. Does anyone else have information in this aspect of their uniform?

See this illustration from John Mollo & Malcolm McGregor--Uniforms of the American Revolution (1975) Stripes could be narrower and closer together.

Remember, there were several different Germanic states, NOT ONLY Hesse Cassel, that sent troops, all with slightly different uniforms.

The figures are superb!!!!:D:D

Actually, on that note, Hesse Cassel sent about half the total number of germans that fought in the AWI. Because this was the largest single contigent, they are all referred to as "Hessians" but not all were. The units came from several of the numerous, small nations that would eventually form Germany.

Hi Tex

The Mollo book illustrates examples from each of German units that came to America. The ones with striped breeches were either red or blue stripes but all those shown are narrow stripes and more closely spaced than the K&C figures. Perhaps someone may have the actual pictorial source for the K&C Hessians?

Hi Randy,
Thanks for posting that image. Now the way is clear to purchase those Hessians.

Well - I thought the figures just look great and what I have read in the past it looked very accurate in their uniforms.

As you can see from my post below I am asking for those with more expert opinions on the uniforms to comment. Hessian uniforms are a complex topic and I certainly will bow to those with greater knowledge. As an academic I am just curious.:) I personally like the figures and plan to buy some.

While I personally would have preferred the pants not be striped, these are still by far the best Hessian figures on the market.

Colorful figures must sale better, because Andy has gone to a lot of extra trouble painting all those stripes. I would hate to be the person responsible for painting strips all day. The amazing thing is that every figure has the same perfect stripes, what an excellent example of K & C’s painters’ skills.

You mistaken my comments to be directed at you - they were not. Actually, you have a great background on the subject matter and would not make the mistake to speak with out knowing the subject matter - unlike others.

Thank you for your information provided to those who felt there was another crisis that had to be worried about.

I for one have grown very weary of the "lets attack" K&C on everything - cant we simply enjoy the figures for what they are?

The last thing I wanted was to start another conflict. They are gorgeous figures, thin or wide stripes and I am sure will energize K&C's AWI line.
Now if we can just get an Anglo-Sudan series going.

Randy

I am willing to bet that some Hessian units had wide stripes as well. Again, as stated before these guys were from several Germanic Kingdoms - not just one.

I know you are an avid Napoleonics collector and here is a Napoleonic era flag issued by the German Duchy of Hesse in 1806. Note the wide red stripes. I would love to know the link between the red/white and Hesse?

Thanks Jeff

K&C's stripe painting looks neater and more carefully done.
