The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug (2 Viewers)

Like King Kong, Jackson over does it. I don't mind a long movie on DVD but I have stuff to do in my life. Get on with it. I don't need King Kong sliding on the ice in Central Park for 20 min. Jackson took out any sexuality with Ann Darrow, and made the relationship more like that in "Mighty Joe Young."

I did notice in my own reaction to Desolation, was that the I was drawn in by the scenes actually from the book such as Bilbo and Smaug. Bilbo's riddle duel in Unexpected was like that for me as well. I can imagine that there will be "Extended" DVDs way in the future. I always hit "Extended Cut" on the LOTR DVD, but maybe not on The Hobbit.

It's OK to get more on the characters from Jackson. He seems to have attached "fan fiction" to his his version of the story.

Nope. I'm sticking with the books and my own imagination in illustrating what I read. Each successive film falls shorter of that mark than its predecessor. But suum quique, as they say.

Prost!

I do like the movies but I agree with your point about the books. 1004 paperback pages of LOTR has gotten me through some tough times.

SMMAAUUUGGGGGG \M/ \M/

I AM FIRE, I AM DEATH!!!!

I loved it. I really just wanted to see the dragon. The love scene with the elf broad and that dwarf is just hysterical. I laughed so loud when he woke up and saw that elf that I embarrassed my wife and kids. Probably pissed some people off but it was pretty hysterical to me.

I posed the question to my family- who do you like better Smaug or the Witch King of Angmar??? They all took the WK.

JRR Tolkien is one of the finest gifts England ever gave to the world.

What irks me about the Hobbit movies is the depictions of the Dwarves and others. The ridiculous fantasy armor worn by the Dwarves defending the mine in the first film, the look of the Lake people Men-At-Arms Medieval Russians. I was attracted to the books because Tolkein's Northwestern European folklore and the Medieval Britain descriptions of clothing, armor and weapons. The physical settings of the book gave you the impression of the rolling green hills of Britain where as the movie landscapes look like the dry steppes of Central Asia. Less is better and sticking with historical medieval NW European costume would have been true to the books.
