This looks interesting although not coming out until end of the year.

Based on the last case of trial by combat in France.

The Last Duel is an upcoming historical period drama film directed by Ridley Scott. Based on the book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager, the script is written by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Nicole Holofcener, with Damon starring in the lead role opposite Adam Driver, with Affleck in a supporting role.

Former best friends Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris are ordered to fight to the death after Carrouges accuses Le Gris of raping his wife in 14th-century France.

That's a coincidence, last night I watched The Duelists, also by Ridley Scott, on Amazon Prime. Which was set around the time of the Napoleonic Wars.

The Duelists is one of the most beautifully filmed movies I've ever seen. The scenes where D'Hubert and Feraud pursue each other through the ruins in the forest always amaze me. The uniforms are spot on, and the film really captures the atmosphere of the early 19th century. And Tom Conti has a short, but very nice turn as D'Hubert's physician friend.

I agree, a beautiful scene. I wouldn't last long there, I'd find it difficult not to laugh at those guys with braided hair. I'm thinking they'd be a bit sensitive about it.

You would have been getting a lot of duel challenges. However if living in those days you would accept it as normal and be asking for braiding tips.

Duellists had a very annoying ending.

I guess braids weren't as weird as some hair fashions in historical times, maybe even now. Yes the ending was a bit different, at least neither died, unlike his Alien movies etc.

SPOILER ALERT IN CASE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE !

OzD, my problem with the movie was that neither of them died {sm3} They were a disgrace to duellists everywhere. 30 years and nobody dies^&grin They should have been kicked out of the Hussars for being poor swordsmen. Needless to say I had a very strong preference about which of them I would liked to have seen get a very painful sword through the stomach.

Between you and me the ending had me quietly cursing a certain toy soldier producer who highly recommended the movie{sm4}

Nice uniforms though.

Ha ha reminds me of a certain Brisbane dealer that recommended I watch Kelly's Heroes, pretty sure he enjoyed those goofy WW2 antics more than I did :wink2:

"The Duellists" is based on a short story by Joseph Conrad. The point isn't to give an encyclopedic explanation of duels, but to look at one man's unrelenting obsession and how it impacts his victim. I think the end of the movie works perfectly.

Besides Tom Conti, look for Alun Armstrong as D'Hubert's friend, Albert Finney as the Prefect of Police, Edward Fox as an associate of Feraud, and Pete Postelthwaite in a cameo role as a valet.

Prost!

That Brisbane dealer has awesome movie taste and you should be grateful he introduced Oddball into your previously Oddball deprived life.

[SPOILER ALERT]

I agree that the end of the story and movie is perfect. Feraud would prefer death. Instead, he has to live the rest of his life as a non-entity, knowing he was bettered by the man he detests. Spiritually, he is dead.

It's been said that the supporting cast was better than the leads.
