The Legion in Algeria - 1840's (2 Viewers)

That's fine, our Algerian legionnaire's are all 1890 onwards so fit in perfectly
Hi Guys, I am also a great fan of the Legion and all related to it....As a follow up tp Marco´s note and to help in placing a timeline on the Legion´s uniform and especially the head gear the famous kepi and the use of pith helments... The available literature has losts of references, in this note I will refer to two titles I really like Osprey Men at Arms 461 - The French Foreign Legion 1872-1914 by Martin Windrow and Mike Chappell, and Osprey Warrior number 157 French Foreign Legion Legionnaire 1890 - 1914 by Martin Windrow and Peter Dennis ) . In both titles the researches point out that the pith helment was adopted in 1880 specifically for the Tonkin expedition between 1884-1885 being the helmet covered by a dark blue cloth, then again in the Dahomey and Madagascar expeditions between 1892 and 1896. Being that in Dahomey the uniforms change a bit, the jackets are short and no overcoat and pith helments are khaki in colour and in Madagascar unifom ( trouser, coat and helmet cover are in blue ). The version used by TGM ( Blue coat, white trousers, pith helment covered by white cloth and black leather gear was adopted for the Tonkin expedition in 1895) . The pith helment with white cover along with the blue coat and white trousers came into partial use in Algeria as of 1903 - being the white kepi still the main headgear, which is a great timeline as it matches with the rest of the TGM Legion series especially the one with the M1907 St Etienne when the Legion started to receive machineguns as of 1908......
Cheers
