Just read the Wikipedia entry of this church of complete nutters, adding the other religious lunatics in the world and their maddness is why I am an atheisist.
Wayne.

Agreed, that is why there is so much nonsense going on in the world today.

Though I would never discuss the question of the existence of God on the Forum, I do feel the need to point out that the perceived shortcomings of organised religion are not proof that God does not exist any more than the good they do proving the opposite. Like any social organisation, religions possess the same strengths and faults as their membership. A few annoying arguments on a TS Forum about the best manufacturer do not convince me that the Hobby is stupid, just that some people have views and ideas that are different to mine. Just because people commit atrocities in the name of religion does not necessarily mean that belief in a deity is wrong.

But Tom and Wayne, when the time comes, rest assured I will put in a good word for you both!{sm4}{sm4}

Jack it's more that people can take their various religions, Christianity in particular here, and everyone from a Hitler or a minor league monster like Fred Phelps to a Martin Luther King or my modest friend the reverend in New Hampshire all supposedly read from the same book. Perhaps some people bring their niceness to their religion or their monstrosity rather than getting it from the religion, but heck, it's supposed to be the same message. Both ends can look at the same book but the Nazis could get authority and a "pass" to do what they did from that book or from leaders pretending to interpret that book. The Third Reich was definitely not atheist nor some let's pretend cult.

Heathens the lot of you. Off course the Nazis were right. Simmo.{sm2}

Well......errrrr.... THEY thought they were right and had the weapons and cool uniforms. Plus they thought they could get away with it, AND go to heaven for it. Added to that they had allies in other countries that thought the same thing.

Well, I don' t think they thought they were right :smile2:, Hitler and nazi just thought it was natural that their superior race leaded the world and exterminated the weaker races, so they didn' t aspire to paradise I guess! And about the allies, well, they just were hungry to get new lands and privileges by following germans , others to defend themselves from red invasion staying techically with germans like Finland, Romania, Estonia, Latvia..

You say Martin Luther King minor league monster???????? You may not like religions( I also don' t like them and i don' practice), but King is one of the best men the human race has had...He preached love and tolerance, and was killed by fanatic extremists....Maybe you got wrong with the fanatic and neo nazi Farrakhan and the black panthers..

Maybe a better term is "entitled" and they were convinced that they had a racial and religious
"ENTITLEMENT."

1 a : the state or condition of being entitled : right b : a right to benefits specified especially by law or contract

2 : a government program providing benefits to members of a specified group; also : funds supporting or distributed by such a program

3 : belief that one is deserving of or entitled to certain privileges "

Poppo please excuse the English dictionary language. I do not wish to be offensive to you as I read that you are not from an English Speaking country.

Hi Poppo,

I think you misunderstand Scott's references to the personalities he mentions. Let me try to clarify.

I believe Scott means:

People can interprete religion in either a constructive or destructive manner. One can interprete religion in a destructive fashion, much like Hitler or the minor league monster Fred Phelps or they can interprete religion in a more constructive manner as did Martin Luther King or Scott's modest Reverend friend in New Hampshire. I do not believe Scott intended to refer to Martin Luther King as a minor league monster. Instead, his reference to Martin Luther King is highly respectful.

I hope my explanation of Scott's intended meaning is helpful.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Gentle Friends,

Please tread carefully through this discussion. As you know, religion is one of those topics that can cause passions to rise to a high level and, consequently, create a highly charged and tense atmosphere. Please keep your discussion related to the interpretation of nazism rather than to religion in general.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :smile2:

Sorry Poppo. From one extreme to another. King being on the better opposite end of the comparison with my Reverend friend.

Thank you Pat. That's what I meant.

Thank you Scott, I understand what you meant now.

Joseph Stalin was a practciing atheist and he is responsible for more deaths than anyone else in history. Other famous atheists who killed loads of people because of their atheistic beliefs include Pol Pot, Mao Tse Tung.

Damian,

The Communists also had their own dogmas, heresy, martyrs, inquisitions, iconography, and rituals, even a form of Pseudo-science.

These guys killed people who didn't cooperate with their regimes. The Russians probably attacked the churches and clergy because of their cooperation with the Czar, but still used the church for support in WW II when it became The Great Patriotic War.

Like the Nazis, the Communists came along in a time of increased efficiency in modes of destruction.

Going only as far back as 1914-18 one sees that a collection of divine right monarchies and religiously strong democracies could wade chest deep into war with the beginnings of planes, machine guns, tanks, gas, high explosives, and submarines. 16 Million deaths and 20 million wounded (wikipedia) by folks that did claim to believe in various higher powers and morals. One can see from the iconography in these beautiful cemeteries of this war that there is hope for an afterlife and that the dead died for God and Country.

Go to WW II and all of the powers except Soviet Russian, which still had the Orthodox Church. "Good" or "Bad" most of the destruction was done by theists.

I can't say how many more would have been killed in La Conquista, the Crusades, or the 30 Years War if the troops had machine guns or gas but we can see that the majority of the forces who did possess them in the 20th Century were theist.

You know that is not true. The Communists had the League of the Militant Godless. The Nazis were opposed to all forms of Christianity and looked tor restore some sort of Pagan religiosity. By and large Christianinty has been one of the greatest foces for good and progress morally, politically and scientifically in history.

Damien, I did look this stuff up about numbers and politics. If it is not true, I would be wrong but I didn't lie to you,

The Communists had the League of the Militant Godless.

Yes but.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_Militant_Atheists#Disbandment

The Nazis were opposed to all forms of Christianity and looked tor restore some sort of Pagan religiosity.

But during their rule they used existing Christian groups as needed, suppressing the groups and individuals who opposed them.

Damian, that is debatable but not here. You have to figure that Moses had to "get out of Dodge City" after he killed that Egyptian meaning that the Egyptians already had laws against killing.

The dictators were able to use or suppress religion and the religious as needed. This doesn't say anything about the existence of any deity but may speak about the truth claims of the religion and it's members.

The Ancient World was extremly violent and it was the Judeo-Christian tradition that brought a more compassionate way of looking at the world into being. The Romans crucified and massacared people at teh drop of a hat as did all the ancient civilizations. Why do atheists always attempt to distance themsleves from the actions of the most conspicuous and militant atheist movements of the last century. Atheism was not an afterthought to Commuinsim it was central to its whole mission. You are trying to convince people that the violence of the twentieth century was caused by religion. In fact it was the rejection of religion (the 19 th century philosophers trumpeted the Death of God) that lead to the most cataclysmic century known to humanity. Nietsche himself proclaimed the death of God and we all know where his philosophies lead. So we can using your logic even then postulate that atheism lead directly to Nazism.
