The new man cave (1 Viewer)

Well I,m just about settled into the new house and I started my man cave in the basement. I plan on finnishing it off in the future and building a wall and adding a ceilling and a wall to wall rug or somekind of flooring in the future but for now it will have to do as is.
I,ve got my little work desk to paint and convert, my stereo, TV with cable, my guitar and amps, all my books, and it seems to stay cool with the summer heat! What more can I ask for? Lets hope it dosn,t flood!!!

Hi Tim

Great to see you up and running again. Looks like you've got things nicely organized. Do you have a dehumidifier to keep the damp away from your collections? If not it's a must especially in a basement. I learned the hard way
years ago when we lived in Syracuse. I had my books in the basement and the dampness was unkind to them.

Looks cool Fish. I would recommend (if it hasn't been done), gettng the basement sealed, that way you won't have to worry about floods, leaks, etc.

Thanks for the advice guys! I,ve been thinking about getting the dehumidifier already but there not that cheap and I,ve been putting it off but I,m sure its cheaper then having my stuff ruined.

The basement seems to be pretty water tight, we,ve had some good rain and its stayed dry but its a new house and might settle and crack the foundation and leak in the future????

Most of my stuff is high enough off the floor in the basement where it wouldn,t get damaged if there was a leak and I think if it were to leak it would start out slow with just a small leak here or there before it progress to the point of flooding the basement out and ruining all my stuff. I,m on a hill and not in a flood zone.

Hi Tim,

I know you are going to greatly enjoy your new house. The basement "Man Cave" will become a source of great joy for you. I know that has been true in my case.

Have you determined the size your room will be? Also, have you considered the furniture arrangement within the room? One of the challenges for me has been the lighting. I use internally lighted curio cabinets to display my figures. In addition, I have installed track lights in the ceiling to futher illuminate the contents of the cabinets. I am very happy with the end result.

If it is not too much trouble, I would enjoy seeing your room as it is being constructed. Of course, seeing the completed project is a must!

Let me know if my experience in planning a "Man Cave" can be of any help to you. Good luck with your great project!

Pat the man cave is not on the top priority list to many other things to do first but I do want to get the wall built soon to seal it off from the rest of the basement first and keep the cats out. They tend to like to jump up on stuff and knock things over. Once the rooms boxed in I can drop the ceiling and put in some ceiling tiles. Its not going to be a very done up looking space when its done but I want it to look a lot better then it does now.
I have a lot of yard work to do before I get around to touching any of this. I just got in the house from working on a 1/1 scale rock wall diorama in my back yard that is very hot and tiresome work.
I still have blisters on my hands from spreading dirt in my back yard wich still has no lawn. And I,m still tring to figure out what to do for my drive way???
I think I,m going to just spread down some crushed rock for now? I have a cousin that offered to do it in concreate at cost but getting him to come look at its like pulling teeth. so i,m not sure if I,ll go with asfalt instead? but both need crushed rock under it and it,ll look better then the mess of clay, rock and weed I have there now!

The worst part of all is the wife who wants everything done yesterday but dosn,t help me out with anything unless you call taking all my grass seed I bought and spreading it across the half finnished loam I spread that still needs to be pitched and evened out along the wall I,m in the process of still building, so there goes two full bags of grass seed to waste at $30 bucks a bag. What I didn,t ruin the birds will eat.
Did I get to tell you guys I,ve been a bit stressed out lately? When its not my old lady driving me crazy it,s my mom who now misses us being at the old house and is also driving me nuts but lets not go there the stress is coming back just thinking about it.

Sorry to go on guys but I guess this forum is a release for me.

Congrats Tim on your new home. Your area looks good and the conversions on your figures look great. I would recommend a dehumidifier for your basement. I had one for years and I have a dry basement but need one in the summer to keep humidity down. Leadmen

I guess that moving is always like this, a little bit of stress but then it settles down. No pain no gain! The gain is already apparent with your toy soldier room, which looks filled with nice stuff.

I'm so jealous of you Yanks and your basements, not to mention members with lofts/attics The closest I have to a 'man cave' is the dinning room which I have converted to a office/display area.

Btw Fish, go for the concrete driveway. I have had some houses with long driveways and have tried to cut costs by using gravel etc. But you get weeds etc growing through it whatever you do and you also get wheel ruts, especially in wet weather. You can't beat concrete as it looks good, it's low maintenance and doesn't cost that much more anyway.
