The Pacific-Episode 3 (1 Viewer)

I guess I must be in the minority because I got something out of the episode :) I have given up on a history of the Pacific War and realize that Hans and Spielberg are looking from the point of view of just a few Marines.

Didn't anybody watch the previews and trailers? This show is not only about the war but its effect on young men far from home. As far as the writing, I enjoyed the heck out of "Battle Cry" and felt more bond with its characters 30 minutes into the movie than I do these guys, but that's the screen writers' fault. Even the Duke's "Sands of Iwo Jima" had a lot of the movie in Austrailia and in Hawaii.

My son and I did get a laugh out of the MP's revenge after the first drunken binge in Melbourne. The "hung over Marines standing formation" has been done before, but this was one of the better ones.

Next week is New Britain, another jungle hell hole.

Because of the characters are in the 1st MAR DIV we shouldn't see much (if anything) on Tarawa.

I agree that this is a whole different animal that "Band of Brothers".

I rather liked the third episode. The Australian rehab was a rather important part of the story and I believe that it is a matter of record that the Marines raised a little h*** while there. There is at least one instance of a large scale "battle" between the Marines and the populance that occurred. At any rate, episode four looks like it will be a real action filled one. -- Al

I think what people keep losing sight of is that they are focusing on three differerent persons, not a company or a group and that this is not intended to be a history of the Pacific, which was fought over large swaths of territory unlike Europe. BoB lent itself better to a history of the western part of the ETO because of the smaller amounts of territory and Easy company's involvement in the principal campaigns.

I don't get this quote by Tom Hanks? Why would he say this? Racism, really????? I may be a little behind on my knowledge of the Pacific but as I recall we didn't go to war because the way the Japs looked, talked and lived their lives.

"'The Pacific' is coming out now, where it represents a war that was of racism and terror"

I don't think he means racism was the reason for going to war, but reflects prevailing attitudes among the participants on both sides. There was a great deal of war era propaganda which portrayed the Japanese along racial stereotypes. If you watch the old war movies there are lots of references to them as "yellow monkeys" "nips" etc. And the Bugs Bunny cartoons where the Japanese all had buck teeth and glasses. That was by design to fuel hatred for an enemy.

Well Said, Jazzeum and Binder--totally agree.............Stryker

For the question of race and it's place in the Pacific war, read "War Without Mercy" by John Dower. It is an outstanding work that will open eyes. -- lancer

Good source, Lancer!!

I think that the series will show this more and more as the episodes move on. It has already shown some of that on Guadalcanal, and with Sledge's character shooting the jap, after being told not too. His reply was that "we were sent out here to kill japs" From the prevailing attitude that I have heard, that was a common practice. I think it did turn racial, the closer to Japan that we got. If we would have to have landed there, I'm sure that the entire population would have been considered dangerous and deadly...............Stryker

George:

Lets hope you are right!

I really enjoyed "Band of Brothrs", bought all the books, and I really looked

forward to this series. I really hope it comes alive and brings us the same

kind of living history we experienced with "Easy Company"

John,
Sledge saw the most combat of the three main characters; Basilone went on a stateside bond drive until he requested to be rotated back to the Pacific and his next action is on Iwo Jima, Leckie will be heavily involved in the next episode and a couple of others, but Sledge really was knee deep in the @#$%, seeing action on three major island invasions.

I can see several of the episodes getting very, very intense, so hang in there.....................

You have to be kidding buddy! You North American Yankee talk is not easy to take either. Give me a break you fellers you are talking like alot of backward Southerns eating grits and chewing tobacco. That is pretty close without useing more colourful language my friends.Simmo.

This is not very good news about this series as in Australia we have not seen it yet.The Pacific war was very violent with not to many prisoners taken in the jungle. Not by the Australian forces anyway. Can't wait till it starts here.Simmo.

Simpson: don't listen to the pre-determined opinions by some people on this site. THIS SERIES IS ABOUT THREE DIFFERENT MARINES AND THIER PERSONAL EXPERIENCES, COMBAT AND OTHERWISE DURING WWII. It is NOT and NEVER was intended to be a grand battle plan of the entire campaign--island by island, year by year, and outfit by outfit. Two major authors, post WWII, and a man that won the medal of honor is good enough for me and most people to enjoy and learn about.

Enjoy the series, I have read the books, things are as they were depicted and alot is going to happen VERY INTENSLY. The AUSSIE forces were great comrades in arms, and fought greatly in many places like BUNA. Thank your countrymen for the freedom we all enjoy today. The Marines loved your country, it reminded them of what we were fighting for, and of home.....Stryker

Thanks STRYKER II for having some good positive things to say here about the Pacific series .To be honest American forces are and will always be honoured in this country. I can't wait till it starts here.Simmo.

I have seen all 3 episodes once, and I have to say...that the 3rd is the one I liked the best! So, to each his own I guess:D:D:D.
Probably will see them and appreciate them fully when on DVD.

Ya'll excuse me but that's my personal take on that...

You Australians got the convicts and we got the Puritans.

I don't have HBO so I'll have to wait for the DVDs. How are they doing on authenticity of gear and uniforms? Are the women characters wearing 1940s stuff? Usually women in WWII movies have the hair styles of the decade the movie was made.

IMHO the producers have done an outstanding job with uniforms, weapons, and civilian dress. They did their research. -- Al

Agreed; they certainly did their research as everything so far has been spot on.

The episodes with Sledge's involvement are going to get ugly, so be prepared that from here on out, the ride is going to get bumpy and nasty............
