I thought it was mediocre! Perhaps my epectations were too high

because Band of Brothers was so wonderful!

I was disappointed that they did not cover the attack on the airfield, instead focusing on the marines up on the hill. I worked with a great old marine who served on Guadalcanal and I will never forget his storys!

Right in the middle of telling you something he would yell out BOOM which scared the hell out of you and got your attention to say the least. He told me he landed on the canal with little resistance and his unit raced to capture the airfield. They got there so fast the Japanese Seebees were still on their equiptment trying to finish it.

My friends name was John, he said when the Japanese saw the marines they raced for the jungle on the far side of the airfield with the Marines on their heels!

John said the marines ran across that airfield screaming and shooting and chasing the Japanese for all they were worth......they wanted to chase them into the jungle before they could mount a defensive position on the far side of the airfield.

John told me he was running for all he was worth to get across that open airfield where they had no cover. He said about 50 yards from the end he looked over at his buddy alongside him just as he got cut in half by machine gun fire. John said his friends legs ran a couple of steps before they collapsed
beside him......he said he covered the last distance faster then he ever moved in his life.

That is the story I guess I expected.......not men sitting up on a hill watching a naval battle.

That was really a terrible battle, and those marines were really something!

I thought the episode was excellent.I think each episode will be better and better as BOB was.

Yeah, it was cool but not great yet.

You know Band of Brothers started off slowly too didn't and yet it finished off well.

I think I'll give this one some time to develop more like I did with Band of Brothers. Dang, the previews of upcoming weeks look great don't they?

I thought it was just right, they are trying to tie you in to the three main characters. The battle scenes were great, I'm sure it will get more intense at each episode. I wish they would be two hour episodes, it just seemed to fly by to fast. That campaign was hell, knowing there supply ships were gone. Can't wait for episode two and beyond, will be watching all the replays, just like BOB.:)

It turns out that Robert Leckie is the father of my son's 8th grade Social Studies teacher :)

I'm with John and Carlos, I found episode I to be disappointing. How could they fail to focus on the Cactus Airforce and the battle for Henderson Field? Plus, I thought the night battle scene at that creek was not particularly well shot. It was no where near the caliber of the action scenes in Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan. I'm sure it will get better, but this episode was a real let down from all the hype.

I think it's interesting so far. A bit of a slow start, but that sounds like the real war effort - it took a while to build up steam. I imagine that the choice of "hill" versus "airfield" was based on where the real characters were during the action. Not every Marine ran across the airfield, others were establishing the perimeter. So far, we have only seen the action on Alligator Creek against the Ichiki (spelling?) Detachment. Like the classic movie "Guadalcanal Diary" they are focusing on the "mud Marines". The air and naval actions could easily fill another miniseries. They didn't show the Marine "Stuart" light tanks moving across Alligator Creek to finish off the Japanese, so I'm sure we are getting the simplified versions of the battles.

One "funny" thing that struck me was that in the title sequence there was a scene with an aircraft carrier with transports around it. What's funny? The carriers operated as a seperate group, plus the ships were moving slowly with planes launching and an aircraft carrier needed to operate at flank speed to get wind over the deck to fly off aircraft.

I think this is going to be a good series.
