Does anyone know the reason, apart from the obvious one, why the Japanese executed 5, and only 5, of the defenders almost directly after the surrender? I've only seen a very brief reference to that one - although the reason why all 98 of the civilian contactors left behind on the island to carry out slave labour were murdered later in the war (1943..?), was given at the subsequent war crimes trial as being the Japanese garrison were worried about having to deal with a 5th Column should the Island be counter-invaded.
About as flimsy an excuse for a cold blooded massacre as I've ever heard.
