Always admired this instrument. I bought two kits of this lovely representation of the instrument. Now assembling both in two different configurations.
WIP on the two sousaphones. One is being done as per the kit. The other is being modified as an earlier type.
If successful, I want to make a couple of unusual musicians.
great to hear from you. Not the helicon. Conn 1893 or Pepper 1896. This is the raincatcher (original upward pointing). The earlier one was modified and I've spraypainted it to reveal any defects. I've also added all the tubing except for the teeny mouthpiece which will be added after I've sculpted the figures with it.
These are excellent castings and I intend to build one with a mounted band. US Cavalry I guess as there are no extant pictures of any in the British army ( all helicons). I don;'t want to do any modern bands and amy ony doing pre WWII or native bands. I even trolled for the very exotic Indian Border Force mounted on camels. No such luck. What I can make out is that they use only helicons.
After a couple of rounds of adding putty and sanding it off, I sprayed both sousaphones in matt grey, then painted them in brass and gave them a black wash.
Finally making a start on this project. I’ve decided on the 12th US cavalry band, located at Fort Brown on the Mexican border. No particular reason except for some nice ref photos of one bandsman holding a sousaphone.
again some mucking abt with selecting a horse pose. The horse saddle and legs are Historex parts. I found a suitable scale link US head and will be using Randy Steffan books on us cavalry for ref.
Trying to do this piece in parallel with my China Marines piece.
still trying to pull it off… I start so many projects and am still playing catch up.
I decided to do something with the hind legs. 4 perfectly placed hoovesare rather boring n toysoldier ish. I notice that many horses rest their hind legs a little off. Sometimes they fidget or due to poor conformation. So I’ve decided to do the same for this horse. One foot ahead of the other. Also trying to create a knock knees look to this pony. A light undercoat spray to visualise the changes.
