As a kid in the seventies the tv event of the week was the classic series ' The Sweeney' , it was so popular that people said on a Thursday night the streets of Britain were deserted as 'The Sweeney is on'. On a Friday at school groups of us lads would beat the living daylights out of each other re-inacting scenes from it until it got so violent at lunchtime that we were banned from playing it and letters went to our parents questioning whether it was a good prog to let us watch? (my letter never made it home^&grin)

Anyway, they have just released a new film of the Sweeney starring Ray Winstone as Jack Regan, but for anyone who loved the original my question is this, with mobile phones and modern cars etc is it really a remake or just a cop film they've called ' The Sweeney'??? I'm not saying its not any good because I've not seen it, but set in modern day London can it really be 'The Sweeney'?? Does the fact that Ray Winstone uses the line ' Get your trousers on, you're nicked' , make it the real deal?

I love the original sweeney. I have a horrible feeling that this will be tripe!! Ray winston is a great actor and I like a lot of the roles he does play but, I think it will be a poor attempt at a classic series and films from the 70's.

Some things are best left alone this and the Italian job are prime examples. Mind, I hope I am wrong and when its hits blue ray that I am forced to buy it as its excellent

If it were to be made in the same time frame and similar stories as the original it would be a proper tribute to the "Sweeney" arguably the best cop show the Brits have made...why do these smart *** directors think they can do a better job than the original ? I am living in dread they will do a remake of "To Hell and Back"...Okay so Audie was'nt a great actor...but.. the film was believable and was'nt over bulldusted like the average John Wayne movie... here's hoping they do a worthy job of the SWeeny...TomB
