The Tailor of Panama 2001 (1 Viewer)

Hi All,

Just saw this movie. Pierce Brosnan in a somewhat campy role as an odious spook. Geoffrey Rush is the gem here. The plot is ludicrous and the cast seems to ham it up.

Read the book and didn't care for it very much. Le Carre's later books are not nearly as good as his Cold War stuff, which are the best of the genre IMO. No interest is seeing the movie. Chris

I thought it was ok, but thought that the earlier, similar, Our Man in Havana, starring Alec Guinness, did it better. -- Al

Al, what are on your best spy movie list?

THe Spy Who Came in From the Cold, Smiley's People (mini series) and the Man Who Never Was come to mind. The 007 movies are more adventure/fantasy (the R Moore versions) than spy flicks. Chris

Chris, I liked those, as well. Would add 'Reilly; Ace of Spies', starring Sam Neill and done back in the 80's, to the list. Others would be the Bourne film series, The Ipcress File, and The Fourth Protocol, which starred Caine and Brosnan. I also think Hitchcock made some good ones. -- Al

Yes, like all of those. Forgot the Reilly series and I have that on DVD (or VHS :rolleyes2:). The 39 Steps, may have been Hitchcock, can't remember. North by Northwest is one other. Casablanca was a war romance, but may be counted as a spy movie as well. Fourth Protocol was also an excellent book. Manchurian Candidate, the original. Night People with Gregory Peck and Buddy Ebsen.

Speaking of spies, will be watching Sons of Liberty tonight.

Chris
