The Stonewall Brigade had just broken the tree line and formed to begin to fire by file by company when they first noticed the Federal line to thier front already taking aim and well within range.

At this moment, well within range, Col. Creighton ordered his men to open fire.

The constant volleys by rank by company created an almost continuous fire into the advancing Confederates.

Federal company officers kept up the constant firing by their companies

The compact Federal lines were a flury of activity as men loaded, aimed and fired.

Through the fight, the 7th OVI's flags marked the center of their position.

Now it was the Stonewall's Brigade's turn to open fire.

Seeing the effect of the Federal fire on the first wave of Confederate attackers, brigade officers knew they could not slug it out with the Federals at such close range. Staff officers were sent to direct the regimental commanders of the second wave to start the push for the summit of the hill and to act as the catalyst to drive all four regiments forward.

To be continued....

After their famous last stand on July 1st, the Iron Brigade did end up at Culps Hill at the end of the day and on the 2nd and the 3rd, not sure if they participated in the action there or not.......

George

You are correct the Iron Brigade were at Culps Hill-most of the 2nd day they were rested but that night Col Rufus Dawes and his 6th Wisconsin were ordered to report to General Greene
(XII Corps Third Brigade) who was holding out against extraordinary odds-all but Greenes Brigade had been removed from the breastworks on Culp's Hill just before Johnson's attack.

Dawes moved his regiment in pitch black darkness toward Greene's vulnerable right flank- when they found the breastworks they discovered they were occupied by the 10th Virginia part of Steuart's Brigade. There followed a short sharp fire-fight and the Black-Hats routed the Rebs who fell back. Dawes and his regiment held the position until midnight when it was ordered back to it's brigade.

The renewed attacks on Culp's Hill during the morning of July 3rd were directed to the right of the brigade, so it played no part in repulsing the enemy. Later that afternoon, the brigade was rushed over to Cemetery Ridge where the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble charge was ebbing. Not needed there the men were again ordered back to their positions on Culp's Hill.
Thus ended the Brigades actions at Gettysburg.
