THE WAR OF THE WORLDS---photos released of Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern starring in the eight-part miniseries based on the HG Wells novel that is set in modern-day Europe. This miniseries is not to be confused with the BBC miniseries that is set in Victorian England.

I am a Sci-Fi fan.
I have the Orson Wells broadcast on a CD.
I have the 1953 WotW movie staring Gene Barry / Anne Robinson
I have the 2005 WotW movie staring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning

I wonder what will be so special about this one? ...^&confuse

The '53 version is a classic while I found the '05 version interesting but inferior to the '53 film. Hard to beat many of the 1950's era sci-fi films like When Worlds Collide and especially Forbidden Planet. I just love those early sci-fi films. -- Al

I live about 1 mile from Horsell Common where the Martians landed in HG Wells novel. Never seen any strange lights in the sky.....but we do have a Martian Tripod permanently parked in Woking town centre ^&grin

Cheers

I agree with that assessment.

The actors had to "ACT" in those films and not rely on CGI, Special Effects and other wizardry.
Forbidden Planet was (and still is) one of the best Sci-Fi films ever .. IMO or course. Yes, the movie had some special effects (The ID!) and their laser pistols but the was in addition to wonderful acting. Walter Pidgeon was sooooo spooky, Leslie Neilson play a serious role and all the guys were hot for Alteria (Connie Francis).

I think Earl Holliman was more interested in Robbie the Robot being a functioning still ^&grin

Yes agree, Forbidden Planet is a hugely enjoyable great Sci fi film.

I wonder which has been remade the most - WoW or Invasion of the Body Snatchers? I liked both but haven't seen the originals ever improved upon. I recently watched the remake of "Pet Sematary" and it was awful compared to the original. But hope springs eternal. The recent "Haunting of Hill House" was outstanding.

I remember seeing the original "invasion of the Body Snatchers" and had nightmares about the human faced dog. I liked the re-make of WOTW, but the original is just so cool...especially since they did not have CGI. In the re-make of WOTW, the scene where people go into panic mode at the bridge reminded me of how people acted two days before the Hurricane hit the Florida Keys a couple of years back. When we turned in our rental car to catch the last plane out (we had tickets well in advance...it was luck) the people waiting outside the rental place were acting the same way...panicked.

I loathe re-makes sometimes because they try to "out do" the original a la "The Time Machine". The original is my favorite, the remake was ghastly.
