I second that; good for you Gary. The Cardinals were quite a story this year, 83 wins, they almost blew a 7 game lead, yet they pulled together and beat the Tigers, whom almost everyone thought would win this in four, maybe five. The shoe is now on the other foot.........

Why is it called the "World series" and when did this come into being?

The first World Series came into being in 1903. The owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League proposed to the owner of the Boston Pilgrims (now the Boston Red Sox) of the American League that they play a "world series" of nine games to decide the best team in baseball and that's how the name and the game was born.

As to why it's still called that, the first one was played at a time when the game was only played by Americans so the name made sense then. I don't think they're going to change the name as something like the "Amrerican Baseball Championships" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. I wouldn't want to change the name.
