Ah- Martin, sorry for the emission. As a horseguard, you should check elite. Note how I have resisted the cavalry jokes.{sm4}

"Armored cavalry lends tone to what would otherwise be a disorganized brawl",,posted over training center entrances,,Ft Knox Ky,,,shouted by myself and other students upon entering,,Troop A ,first Recon Squadron,,back then,,
Have never served directly. I was an Army brat of a Father with 20 yrs and 3 tours of Nam. as a medavac. Families of the military don't get much attention.
Doubt that about an almost rear echelon branchThe original quote is about artillery.:wink2:^&grin{sm4}
"Artillery adds dignity, to what would otherwise be an ugly brawl"
- Frederick the Great, king of Germany, 1740 to 1786
I served 8 years with the 2/14th Light Horse Regt of the Australian Army Reserve. Two years of this was with a regular army squadron, though the whole unit is now a regular army formation, currently being rotated through Afghanistan. It is where I got my 'Larso' tag. The Reserve is a bit like the US National Guard or the Territorials in the UK. In Australia it meant parading one weekend a month and a two week camp or two. I was a very modest soldier and frankly, by the end, was a bit old for it but I'm quite proud of my service, such as it was. The army was good to me. Some times it was unpleasant of course, at other times very exciting (the firing range!) but overall a fascinating time in my life.
Ditto for me- very well put!!
I served in various units in the US Army- I'm giving everyone one chance to guess one of em. {sm4}
Mechanized Quartermaster? Field Finance... Just funn'en you Brother! BTW what kind of poll doesn't include CAV? ...oh wait... I see it... "elite forces"...my bag{sm4}:tongue:^&grin
Or you could simply put "Don't plan to........"{sm4}^&grin
Just kidding- as artillery I have to rip on cav.- although my Hungarian ancestors were Hussars in the Great War.
You've got me confused with one of those "Air Cav" boys!{sm4} Interesting about you're ancestors... my family also came from Hungary prior to the ACW. I became interested in cavalry as a youngster because one of them served as a Lt. in the Hussars! He hailed from Pest originally, married a German gal Katharina Huegal, and ended up going into exile in Germany after picking the wrong side of the revolt against Austrian rule. They eventually immigrated to the US and ended up in Dallas, Texas.
My family lived on the boarder with what is now part of Romania :rolleyes2:, and bred horses for military and royal use (i.e. teams of horses for guns and carriages, as well as for cavalry). I am unsure of exactly what they did in the Great War, but I know a number of them served in the cavalry. After losing the war, family lost its money, and emigrated. This was probably a good thing, seeing as they were Jewish.... I went back a number of years ago, and I was able to see the house where they lived, and my father even found his father's birth certificate!
