At a recent local Model show I was fortunate enough to have some display space, and put up the following display representing the 42nd trying to get past the initial baracades of the French at Ticonderoga. I realize it isn't entirely accurate, but I had fun setting it up and many who stopped by to view it seemed to enjoy looking at it. Hope you do as well

This first shot is an overview....base is felt squares with railroad ground work sprinkled heavily around. I find this is a quick way to lay down a presentable lanscape and is extremely easy to clean up when it is time to break down the display.

Unfortunately a lot of the photos are getting cutoff...I will try to resize the next batch before posting

Some more photos, this time with some blury closeups of the 42nd....but a better look at some of the ground work however. As a side note the base for the French cannon was something I found in the parts box from an old late 1950"s 1/40th scale Revel WWII 105 Howitzer plastic kit, that was reworked a bit with some epoxy putty and resin stumps & ground cover added. Fit like a glove/ You may also see many repainted MARX accessories, which also seem to fit in as well

The third photo shows a tree in the back ground made out of a sea sponge, which until now I have had a hard time finding. Recently a Hobby Lobby opened near us and in their art department is a supply of sea sponges, cheap as well. Cut them to shape, spray paint and then dry brush a highlight, mount of a trunk and walla...you have a presentable tree

Looks nice Walt. I can't wait to see what you bring to the Valley Forge show this year.

If all goes well, the plan for my MFCA entries in May will be a bust of A. Lincoln, and a 75mm full figure of Light Horse Harry Lee. May have a 3rd entry, but time is working agaist my completing anything over the next few weeks.

See you there

Walt that's certainly a stunning looking set-up. Darn impressive and kudos to you sir

Some more photos of the display...the first photo gives a closer look at a portion of the sea sponge tree. the last two photos are of the layout without any figures. Kind of gives a clearer view of how the landscape was set up before the figures were added

I especially like the close up of the crew loading the French 4-pounder, very nice indeed.

As a side, the vast majority of the British troops and colonials were behind very similar timber walls during the siege and fall of Fort William Henry - horizontal walls. Even Colonel Monro spent the vast majority of the time at the colonial encampment during the siege - he was not in the fort itself. The British walls supported swivel guns, some 6-pounder and 12-pound artillery. So very easy to just reverse who is guarding the walls, with the advantage that you can more easily add Indian figures if you change the view and the French are attacking.

The 28th from Quebec (PoA) would be very close to the 35th in appearance.

Second aside, the British encampment nearby to Fort William Henry was surrounded by a similar breastwork to the Ticonderoga breastwork and it was huge. The fort proper might have been 350 feet x 350 feet and capable of housing 400-500 maximum. The breastwork encampment was many times larger, 400 yards by 250 yards and accomodated about 1,600 troops in a tent city. The British only had a few days to construct the breastwork. In mid-July, they were still encamped on a hill to the west and the move to the neighboring hill did not occur until late July. Montcalm's army arrived in the first week of August. It was thrown together very fast.

Thanks Frax. Frankly it never occurred to me to move to a wm Henry senerio and have the British on the defensive end of this......something for me to relook at the set up, and the opportunity to add in the colorful Indians and makes for some future display variations.

This forum remains a great source for ideas
