Got a soft spot for Tigers..Saw one in the wild once.....As part of a 2RAR patrol one day in 1955..HUNTING...the local terrorists..(who were armed) either in Kedah..now Kedahan...or Perak.... cant remember which State as we were station in both,,,Kedah first... when the Tiger wandered into us...we did not shoot...it was not ARMED and posed no threat,,,it was as surprised as we were......we stank as much as he did so he did not pick us up in advance....bit of a warie but hunting tigers from an elephants back aint very heroic in my opinion...cheers TomB^&grin Funny stuff Tom.....C'mon the Tigers ^&grin

The Malayan Tiger is not as large as the other Tigers...still beautiful though...I have been to the Perth Zoo to look at the Tiger but evertime the bugger was out of sight somewhere....must say though the zoo's are better these days...remember visiting the Toronga Pk zoo in Syd when I was a kid and the poor animal's were all in cramped cage's...loved the ferry ride though....must say the zoo's are much better these days.....ironic how the National Pks evolved ....maybe the Tiger won in the end......India is the place most people think of Tigers...Malaya has a few but I dont know anything about how the colonials treated them...probably shoot them if they prowled around their Rubber Plantations..... the hunting books sound interesting...the pro hunters are a breed apart....they kill for a purpose...not to big note themselves......I am not having a go at TS Tiger Hunts...they are well done....I just get pissed off at the cowardly way the Tiger was hunted....a hunter on foot in the jungle...fine.....the odd aint even but the Tiger had a bit of a chance...got a bit carried away I guess...cheers TomTigers are magnificent animals aren't they, I envy you encountering one in the wild. I have only seen captive Tigers, most recently at Dubbo Western Plains Zoo in January, it was a Sumatran Tiger, not as large as the Siberian subspecies but a big s.o.b nonetheless, had paws on him wide as a shovel.
I have collected a number of different items over the years including Hunting Books, most were African based but my favorite authors were Jim Corbett and Kenneth Anderson who lived in India. Like a number of dedicated hunters they became early conservationists and only used to hunt Man Eaters, many of which were Leopards which are apparently more aggressive than Tigers. One good thing about Hunting Tigers, Lions etc back in the colonial era was that those animals would most likely be extinct by now because large areas were set aside for hunting and most are now National Parks/Reserves.

QI...that is a scream....actually Mr Fry comes out with some very interesting info...apart from being a brilliant comedian he is very knowledgeably...( I know he read a lot of stuff from card but a lots come's from the top of his head).I dont think there is anyone clever enough or smart enough to host the show....Would I lie to You... is another good comedy ....The Maned wolf is one that did show.....had to look at the thingo to find out what it was ...unusual looking animal......I lived in Sydney after we moved from the Bush....went back a few yrs ago to visit my sister before she passed on.....I thought I was in the Middle East or Asia....the place has changed since I left there in 1954.....Sister lived on the North Shore so it was not too far from the Zoo,,,that has changed for the better,,,,Darling Harbor ..could'nt believe it...amazing what they have done down there...used to ride around Sydney on push bike's when I was a kid...Mascot was a favorite...you could wander around the tar mack and perve on the aircraft...they had Smithy's Southern Cross in a hanger there..it is now on display at Eagle Farm Bris (was years ago)..these religious terrorist have sure stuffed the word up..cant go nowhere anymore,,,,when I got out of the Army I worked for awhile as asst manger at the Oribit Inn at Perth airport...use to be great..wander around ...see the aircraft...talk to pilots..even got a few ride on private aircraft and had a go at flying them....the world will never be like it was...bloody shame... ...cheers TomBTaronga Zoo exhibits have improved but I also had some non-appearance issues with their Where's Wally type animal displays. I have always wanted to see a Wolverine and used to check out their enclosure at Taronga whenever I had the chance. Never did see the bugger when I was younger and haven't visted that Zoo for many years. I was actually born in Sydney so I should get down there more often. A more recent no show was at the Dubbo Zoo, they have/had a Maned Wolf which are from the Pampas in South America and I wanted my children and their girlfriends to see this amazing animal which resembles a large Red Fox on stilts, but couldn't see it anywhere.
The Maned Wolf evolved long legs to enable it to hunt in the long grass on the Pampas and I believe the long grass in India is one of the reasons they used to hunt Tigers from Elephants. And of course as you say it does make it more difficult to be eaten by a Tiger if on an Elephant. However I suspect an Elephants reaction to a Tiger on its tail may be more dangerous than being on the ground as they do panic easily despite their size. As you say most people associate the Tiger with India, and the Lion with Africa for that matter. Even Stephen Fry from the popular QI (Quite Interesting) series falls for that 'factoid', the Indian (Asiatic) Lion is endangered but I'm sure he would be surprised to hear that humans think he doesn't actually exist ^&grin
