Wow! Nice technique! Really great!
Hi all,
I use Armory Gray Primer to prime anything I'm painting whether it's metal or plastic. It's the best I've found (my opinion) for the way I work. Black makes it too hard for me too see all the details and white causes the colors to be very bright (if that's the effect you want - white primer is the way to go).
I use mainly Citadel acrylic paint, but have supplemented those with the much cheaper acrylic "craft" paint found at Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc. I begin by painting the face, hands and any other exposed skin, then the hair, etc. I then paint basically as the figure in question may have gotten dressed: pants and shirt followed by jackets, armor, etc if applicable, followed by gloves, shoes/boots, hats, helmets - then, belts, pouches, etc.. Lastly any weapons or anything being held in the hands..
I've attached photos of Ron Barzso's 1805 U.S. Marines and Barbary Pirates that I painted. These figures are plastic.
Hope you enjoy and keep on painting!
Jim
Jim, nice painting, I used to paint my wargame figures in a similar style but with Humbrol enamels (acrylic wasn't around much in those days).
Perhaps you can be persuaded to paint some figures in the 'How-To' section
Regards
Jeff
Thanks to everyone for the nice comments.... Jeff - funny you should mention painting wargame figures in a similar style... most of my painting has been Warhammer, both Fantasy and 40K.. also other types of fantasy figures.
I've collected figures and playsets for years, but have only started painting toy soldiers within the last couple of years - and not that many so far, as I always have several other projects going on. Hopefully after the holidays I'll be able to paint more - and perhaps record progress on a figure or two.. but I don't see it happening before the first of the year...
I could post some photos of a few of my Warhammer figures - but I don't know if that's off topic since this is a toy soldier forum....
As far as tips and techniques go - I forgot to mention that I finish off the figures with a coat or two of spray, matte varnish.
Thx again,
Jim
Just by coincidence, I've just visited Games Workshop HQ here in Nottingham this afternoon, to pick up some paint supplies. First time I've been, as 40K et. al. doesn't really float my boat.
Wow! What an awesome set up. The building is massive and has a giant hall jam packed with gaming tables and there must have been several thousand gamers all doing there stuff. Fantastic atmosphere and the staff running the shop couldn't have been any more enthusiastic. There was a real buzz going on there.

My son got me into Warhammer 40k...Even though he has moved away, I have kept my Space Marines amd Nids........Michael
Michael - My son and I played when he was maybe in 5th or 6th grade.. We got started on Hero Quest and went into Warhammer Fantasy Battle.. He was always the Wood Elves, High Elves and Dwarfs.. while I was always relegated to Orcs, Goblins and Undead... good times....

I actually found a site dedicated to WW2 gaming, using the 40k rule set. Most of those members were gaming in 25mm, but some had done squad based scenarios in 54mm...Always been tempted to try the rules with my WW2 stuff...Michael
Pictures of the warhammer figures would be nice
