top ten battle scenes (1 Viewer)

Me thinks it obvious that there must be as many outstanding combat scenes as there are outstanding movies. This subject is a fascinating bottomless pit. -- Al

Thought of more, no order:
The Sand Pebbles, the attack on the river boom.
Guadalcanal Diary when the attack drives the Japanese into the sea.
A Walk in the Sun, the farmhouse attack (a favorite movie of mine).
Bataan, almost any of the combat scenes with the M1917 Mgs.:D
Battleground when the GI's outflank the Germans in the mist.
Bridge at Remagen when they attack the farmhouse (early in the movie).
The North Star when the villagers attack and retake their village.
To Hell and Back when Murphy manhandles the MG42 on the hillside.
So many to go...

Lancer: there are so many to choose from. One of my all time favorites is the beach landing in Halls of Montezuma, and the move inland..........Stryker

That is a really good film and one of my favorites. I grew up on the 40's/50's era Pacific WW2 films and love them all. All of them have something of interest even if it is just the combat. There is a rather obscure film called "Beach Red" that is an early attempt to show the conflict from both the US and Japanese side. It is pretty good. I also like "Battle Cry". Some great films about the USMC in WW2 were done back then. Great stuff to grow up on. -- Al

Battle of Stirling, Braveheart
The "Tree Fort" battle in Robin Hood 91'
The scene from The Patriot where he avenges his first killed son
The battles scenes from Troy were good too
And I know someone already said Last of the Mohican's, but it's probably my favorite, especially the last battle scene. It's the music combined with the three Mohican's being Badass's haha

The Battle of Helms Deep in the ''Two Towers'', second movie in Peter Jackson's ''Lord of the Rings'' trilogy. Its got everything, vast hordes, seige machines, storming a breach and a massive cavalry charge. Jackson worked some real on this one.

Lancer: me too, have all of them.................Stryker

The Narnia movies had the potential of some good battle scenes except both battles were staged at high noon on nice days in the summer. ..... and the "good guys" were annoying and homely kids.

The fight with the Warg riders in The Two Towers was pretty good including that strange flip Legolas did into the saddle. It was best seeing it the 1st time on the big screen. The audience gasped!

What's good about the LOTR battles is that I don't feel in the least sorry for the Mordor troops so slaughtering them is OK even if it's funny.

I forgot about The Buccaneer (1958) and the Battle of New Orleans scene which wasn't much like the real Battle of New Orleans but pretty good. I felt bad for the 93rd Regt. (full kilt and bonnets???) getting mowed down with their pipers in the front!

Buford's Defense on the first day of Gettysburg
Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg
The final siege in Kingdom of Heaven
The final attack in The Warlord
The Landing on Iwo Jima in Letters From Iwo Jima
Little Big Horn in Son of the Morning Star
The first battle scene in The Last Samurai
The charge on Beersheba in The Light Horse
The charge up the Hill in Hamburger Hill
And a sentimental favorite of mine, the VC attack in The Green Berets.
And others are so right, there are a lot of great battle scenes

The best one I now remember has to be SPR's landing at Omaha beach. Outstanding and standard setter, IMHO.

I find this a very hard question and would likely have different answers each time I answered. I can offer the following current thoughts:
1) The last battle scene in Saving Private Ryan; the beach portion of the landing scene is just too brutal for me;
2) The first charge and battle against the Saracens in Kingdom of Heaven; which also features one of my favorite single combat scenes between Balian and the lone Saracen knight.
3) The first and second battle scenes at Troy, one with and one without Achilles; also featuring my favorite and maybe the of the best single combat scenes between Hector and Achilles;
4) the battle of Helms Deep in The Two Towers for the reasons noted before
5) the charge of the Rohan in Return of the King;
6) the last two battle scenes in Last of the Mohican's, the ones before and after the water escape, also no doubt the best score and soundtrack for any battle;
7) the first and next to last battles of the Samurai in The Last Samurai; the last charge is simply too sad for me;
8) The charge on Beersheba in The Light Horse; splendid to see them make it under the Turkish guns;
9) the last Chinese assault on the hill in Pork Chop Hill; truly chilling stuff;
10) the Air Cav assault in Apocalypse Now; another nice touch with the music.

Hamburger Hill has some amazing combat scenes which are also almost to brutal for me to watch. I could say the same for Picket's charge in Gettysbeg. Buford's Defense on the first day of Gettysburg is also great (even though he is on the wrong side for me).

"...the Air Cav assault in Apocalypse Now; another nice touch with the music."

It is the music that makes a good number of these scenes.

Another honorable mention would be the cut off platoon in We were Soldiers. As a matter of fact, all of the battle scenes in We Were Soldiers!
